In this Usmaradio feature, Roberto Paci Dalò speaks with one of the key figures of the Nordic music scene: Kristian Blak, composer and multi-instrumentalist from the Faroe Islands.

The conversation, recorded in Riolunato (Modena, Italy), moves through soundscapes, cultural narratives, and the surprising twinning between the Italian village and the Faroese archipelago—active since 2004. This is the first step on the road that will bring Usmaradio to the Faroe Islands in June 2025, as a participant representing the University of the Republic of San Marino at the conference “The Role of Universities in Small Scale Societies”, organized by the NUSCT (Network of Universities of Small Countries and Territories) and hosted by the University of the Faroe Islands.

Special thanks to the Municipality of Riolunato, and in particular to Claudia, for the warm welcome and support in making this meeting possible.

BIO
Kristian’s diverse musical background is reflected in the wide array of music he composes, uniting ethnic music with new compositional techniques.
Kristian has composed solo instrumental works, chamber music, jazz suites, choral works as well as symphonic music. Having made numerous recordings as a performer, Kristian has also toured the globe widely with his own jazz and folk music ensembles. In addition to this, Kristian works as manager and CEO of the Tutl Records label and is artistic director of the popular Summartónar festival.
Kristian Blak is widely regarded as one of the most prominent and important figures of Faroese music history, playing a central role in the musical life and culture of the islands.Born in the Danish peninsula of Jutland, Kristian relocated to the Faroe Islands in ’74, where he’s lived ever since, and where he’s written the majority of his works.

Claudia Schnugg in conversation with Roberto Paci Dalò / NaturArchy Bruxelles iMAL
Claudia Schugg narrates NaturArchy's exhibition at iMAL Bruxelles, May-September 2024

Embracing the arts for systemic change, NaturArchy proposes to re-consider our imaginaries on nature and the non-human.
The exhibition probes issues of deep ecology, sustainability and the decolonisation of nature. A number of art and science works explore and query nature and law, the entanglement of human and non-human, green technologies and new materials, nature and law, ecology and economy, ancient and new knowledge.
From global oceans to water flows, from contamination and bacteria to climate tipping points, pollinators, and landscapes of natural hazards; from natural and artificial intelligence to non-human values, forests, lands, soils, composting; from grief and mourning to rituals, wonder and collective action.

NaturArchy is the theme and curatorial concept of the fourth edition (2022-2024) of Resonances, the flagship initiative of JRC SciArt which fosters collaborations between artists, scientists and policymakers.
NaturArchy aims to explore – through artistic, scientific and legal expressions – how providing Nature and its phenomena with a contract that integrates her totally into our society can redefine our anthropocentric relationship with Nature. Intersecting science and law, reason and style, art and judgment, policy and imagination, NaturArchy wants to re-imagine the western relation of human and non-human, in an attempt to ensure juridical persona to Nature’s many wonders, be they stardust or DNA.
After two years of deep inquiry, research and co-creation, which began with a summer school at Joint Research Centre in 2022 and continued with artistic residencies at JRC in 2023, these works provocatively call to be juxtaposed to artefacts of natural and cultural heritage. To re-imagine our sense of place and belonging to the world; to respond to the entangled and profoundly symbiotic relationship between human and environment, through play and exploration of new possible configurations of the world.

Curated by Caterina Benincasa, Claudia Schnugg, Ingeborg Reichle, Adriaan Eeckels in partnership with iMAL.
Public programme curated by: Celine Charvériat.
Advisor: Paul Dujardin, SciArt Expert Board.

Produced by JRC SciArt in partnership with iMAL

Read more about: JRC • Resonances IV • NaturArchy
