Absence and Presence | Revd Tony Miles | Exodus 32:1-14
Sunday 11th October was Prisons Sunday, the start of Prisons Week, when Christians remember everyone affected by the criminal justice system: people in prison and their families, victims of crime, prison and court staff, chaplains and volunteers.
In this sermon from the 9.30am service at Methodist Central Hall Westminster, Revd Tony Miles reads the story of the golden calf alongside the experience of people in prison, who so easily become out of sight and out of mind. He begins with a six-year-old boy who handed his mum a blank page instead of a drawing for his dad in prison, because that is what it feels like when Dad isn’t here.
Tony reflects on feelings of absence, the ways we try to fill the void, and faith in God’s presence. Prisons hide people from sight, he reminds us, but they should never be beyond our compassion and concern.

Made in the Image of God, Made for Each Other - Chine McDonald
What does it feel like to be made in the image of God? Chine McDonald, director of the religion and society think tank Theos, preaches at the 114th Church Anniversary of Methodist Central Hall Westminster on Sunday 4 October 2026.
Preaching on Genesis 1:26–27 and 1 Corinthians 12:12–27 in the Great Hall where the first General Assembly of the United Nations met in 1946, Chine explores the imago Dei, human dignity and Christian unity in a divided world. Drawing on her own journey from Nigeria to London, she argues that every person bears the image of God, and that because God exists in relationship, we cannot bear that image fully alone. "We are made in the image of God. And we are made for each other."
She calls the Church to be "the mosaic of beauty and difference", a place of radical welcome where the body exists not as different parts but as one, each part equal.
Readings: Genesis 1:26–27; 1 Corinthians 12:12–27
