Combating Depression When the Darkness Won't Lift

Cana Christian struggle with depression and still have faith?

The Bible does not ignore sorrow, grief, discouragement, orseasons of darkness—and neither should the church.

In this message, “Combating Depression,” welook at what Scripture actually says about those times when your soulfeels cast down and hope seems difficult to find.

David cried:

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thoudisquieted in me? hope thou in God...” — Psalm 42:5 (KJV)

Some of God's most faithful servants experienced tremendoussorrow. David was cast down. Job grieved. Elijah became sooverwhelmed that he sat beneath a juniper tree and told God he hadenough. Even Jesus Christ is described as “a man ofsorrows, and acquainted with grief.”

Depression is not automatically evidence of weak faith.

In this sermon, we'll talk about:

• Elijah's depression and God's compassionate response
•Why Christians can experience seasons of deep sorrow
• Thedifference between feelings and God's unchanging truth
• Whyisolation can make depression worse
• Practical steps formoving forward one day at a time
• Why seeking appropriatehelp is not a failure of faith
• How Christians should respondwhen depression becomes a crisis
• Finding our identity inChrist rather than our emotions
• The eternal hope believershave through Jesus Christ

Sometimes the next act of faith isn't something enormous.

Get out of bed.
Open the curtains.
Eat something.
Takea walk.
Call somebody.
Open your Bible.
Pray—even ifall you can say is, “Jesus, help me.”

And then take the next step.

Depression may tell you, “This is how it will alwaysbe.”

But Scripture reminds us that sorrow does not geteternity.

There is coming a day when God “shall wipe away alltears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neithersorrow, nor crying...” — Revelation 21:4.

If you are struggling, please don't isolate yourself or be ashamedto ask for help. Talk with someone you trust, and seek appropriatepastoral, medical, or mental-health support when needed. If you arethinking about harming yourself or ending your life, treat that as anemergency and reach out for immediate help.

Above all, remember David's words:

“Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him.”

The valley is not the destination.

Keep walking.

🙏 If this message encouraged you, please LIKE, SHARE,and SUBSCRIBE to Sermons in the Park, and join menext Sunday for another message from God's Word.

God bless you!

— Rev.
