Matteo Palmer on Guitar, Game Scores & Finding Your Musical Voice / S2 E12

Composer, guitarist, pianist, and producer Matteo Palmer joins Shambhu for an inspiring conversation about creativity, musical identity, and building a life in music.

Matteo's journey began with classic-rock guitar riffs. A concert by fingerstyle legend Alex de Grassi opened the door to the music of Windham Hill, Will Ackerman, Michael Hedges, and George Winston. Today, his work spans contemplative solo guitar, progressive funk, orchestral composition, electronic music, and soundtracks for games including Geometry Dash, Exark, and Melvor Idle 2.

Matteo shares the story behind his deeply personal solo guitar album, Keepsakes, Vol. 1—a collection of newly recorded pieces drawn from 15 years of music. He also explains how he builds orchestral game scores from piano sketches and preserves his own musical voice while composing for someone else's world.

The conversation also explores Cosmic Traveler, Matteo's funk and progressive-rock collaboration with Brian Joseph Casey under the name Hues; his musical collaborations with Shambhu; and why human creativity, individuality, and soul matter more than ever in the age of AI.

In this episode:

• Discovering fingerstyle guitar through Alex de Grassi
• The influence of Will Ackerman and the Windham Hill sound
• Why the space between notes matters
• The story behind Keepsakes, Vol. 1
• Writing music for Geometry Dash, Exark, and Melvor Idle 2
• Matteo's piano-first approach to orchestral composition
• Preserving your identity when composing for games
• Creating funk and progressive rock with Hues
• Collaborating with Shambhu on "Safe Haven" and "Infinite Eyes"
• AI, artistic integrity, and the human soul in music
• Building a sustainable creative career

CONNECT WITH MATTEO PALMER

Website: https://www.matteopalmermusic.com/

LISTEN TO "Infinite Eyes" from "Heart Awakening" - https://ffm.to/heartawakening

LISTEN TO: "Safe Haven" from "The Minstrel's Return - https://open.spotify.com/album/7uY0HctkXVDgsz0yFvwJ6N?si=AO9zzKQdQt-KsIyf7PkvkQ

Listen to Keepsakes, Vol. 1 and Matteo's other releases on your favorite music platform. Tom Eaton on Ambient Music, Will Ackerman, AI & the Art of Deep Listening | S2 E11

In this episode of Shambhu Sessions, I welcome Tom Eaton, a Grammy-nominated ambient musician, producer, recording engineer, mix engineer, and mastering engineer.

Since 1993, Tom has helped countless artists shape their music into finished recordings, and since 2009 he has enjoyed a long creative partnership with legendary Windham Hill founder and producer Will Ackerman at Imaginary Road Studios. Together, Tom and Will have worked on more than a hundred albums, including my second release, Dreaming of Now, where Tom served as recording and mix engineer and co-producer with Will and me.

In this conversation, Tom and I talk about his early musical influences, from George Winston and Tangerine Dream to Jean-Michel Jarre, Patrick O'Hearn, and the electronic music that shaped his ears. We also explore his years working with Will Ackerman, the making of Dreaming of Now, the Grammy-nominated album Brothers with Will Ackerman and Jeff Oster, and his latest collaboration with guitarist Vin Downes, until the light was gone.

Tom shares wonderful insights into ambient music, mastering, creative intuition, musical collaboration, and what makes a recording feel emotionally alive. We also discuss AI in music, the difference between music that functions and music that carries the human heart, and why the artist behind the instrument still matters.

Tom's career is a beautiful reminder that listening is not passive. Listening is part of the creative act.

Learn more about Tom Eaton:

https://tomeaton.net

Listen to Tom's music:

https://tomeaton1.bandcamp.com

Learn more about Shambhu:

https://www.shambhumusic.com
