Gather Round and the Power of Sports: Why We Play
<p>Liv and Josh give us a recap of the Gather Round weekend earlier in the year. Since 2023, Gather Round, the AFL’s festival of footy in the ‘festival state’, has drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors to South Australia. Liv and Josh share some insights into what makes this event so special as a segue to talk about sports and sporting culture more broadly.</p><p> </p><p>Sport, according to Josh, is like a “metaphor for life”. Their conversation touches on themes related to community, camaraderie, and friendships that sport can offer people. They get real about contemporary issues in competitive sports, such as homophobia and racism. They round out their wide-ranging conversation by talking about ways you could get involved in your local sport community. </p><p> </p><p>Liv Webb and Josh Manuel are both engineers by trade and Global Shapers based in Adelaide. <p>What if employment didn’t have to look like a 9-5 job? What if work could be shaped around someone’s strengths, interests, energy, confidence and life circumstances?</p><p>In this episode of <strong>Shaping Futures</strong>, we explore the world of micro enterprise, small, personal businesses that can create meaningful pathways for people who may not fit neatly into traditional employment systems.</p><p>Helen is joined by Josh Fergie from Community Living Project and Erin from Ezzabelle’s Gifts for a warm and honest conversation about what it really takes to help someone build something of their own. Together, they unpack how micro enterprises can support people with disability, neurodivergence, mental health challenges or different life circumstances to discover their skills, build confidence and create work that feels purposeful.</p>

<p>Energy gurus Michelle Howie and Bayan Yazdani give us an update on the latest developments in the energy sector. Together they unpack “what are distributed energy resources?” – DER for short – “what does South Australia’s world-leading energy transition actually means for consumers?” and “who stands to benefit from grid electrification?”.</p><p>Michelle works as an Innovation Development Manager at SA Power Networks by day and is a Global Shaper in the Alumni. Bayan works as a sustainable agriculture policy advisor for the Australian Government and is a Shaper in the Perth Hub.</p><p><br></p>
