Podcast Overview

Welcome to Sharpening Your Edge — the ultimate deep dive into the world of hockey, where we go beyond the ice. Chuck Verdolino, founder and lead instructor at CV3 Hockey Development. I played Tier 1 hockey through 18 on Long Island, competed at the USA Hockey Select 15 National Camp, captained my high school team to a New York State Championship appearance, and later served as a GM in pro hockey. Now, I’m bringing that lifetime of experience to the mic. Erik Melanson, a recently retired Marine Corps officer. I spent the majority of my distinguished military career serving in special operations, where I developed and applied extensive leadership skills in high-stakes, high-performance environments. A lifelong hockey player who grew up on the rinks of Boston, I now bring that same discipline, resilience, and team-first mentality to the sport as a coach for the Philadelphia Little Flyers and as a player for the USA Warriors. My unique blend of elite military experience and deep hockey roots offers a rare perspective on performance, leadership, and the culture of the game. As co-hosts with a passion for the game, we sit down and bring you candid conversations with elite coaches, performance specialists, and hockey minds at every level to dig into what truly drives development — from mindset and leadership to training, nutrition, and recovery. From Backyard Dreams to Olympic Gold & The Walter Cup: Hayley Scamurra's Championship Journey

What does it take to turn a childhood dream into Olympic gold and professional hockey history? In this episode of Sharpening Your Edge, hosts Chuck and Erik sit down with Team USA Olympian and PWHL champion Hayley Scamurra to discuss the journey that has made her one of the most accomplished players in women's hockey.

Growing up on a backyard rink in Buffalo, New York, Hayley dreamed of wearing the red, white, and blue. That dream became reality with a silver medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics before reaching the pinnacle of the sport with Olympic gold at the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina. She also reflects on winning three IIHF Women's World Championship gold medals, capturing the Walter Cup with the Montreal Victoire, and becoming one of the first players to help launch the PWHL before signing with the league's newest franchise in Las Vegas.

Chuck and Erik dive into the sacrifices required to compete at the highest level, the resilience needed to overcome injuries and adversity, and how the culture inside a championship locker room can elevate every player. Hayley also shares behind-the-scenes stories from the Dream Gap Tour, discusses the rapid growth of women's professional hockey, and explains why mentorship and giving back to the next generation have become some of the most meaningful parts of her career.

Whether you're a hockey player, coach, parent, or sports fan, this conversation is packed with lessons on perseverance, leadership, teamwork, and believing in a dream long before anyone else can see it.

Bio

A Buffalo, New York native, Hayley has emerged as one of the most accomplished players in women’s hockey, building a career defined by perseverance, leadership, and championship success. Inspired by countless hours spent skating on a backyard rink with her father and brothers, Hayley set her sights on becoming an Olympian at just 10 years old—a dream she fulfilled when she represented Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics, earning a silver medal, before reaching the pinnacle of the sport with an Olympic gold medal at the 2026 Winter Games in Milano Cortina. Along the way, she has also captured three IIHF Women’s World Championship gold medals and established herself as a key contributor on the international stage.

At the collegiate level, Hayley starred at Northeastern University, where she developed into one of the nation’s premier forwards. During her four-year career, she earned Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors, multiple Hockey East All-Academic Team selections, and recognition as Hockey East’s Best Defensive Forward. Her combination of skill, hockey IQ, and two-way play helped her become one of the program’s most impactful players. Following college, she was selected 10th overall by the Buffalo Beauts in the 2016 NWHL Draft and has continued to excel throughout her professional career.

Most recently, Hayley completed a historic 2025-26 season, becoming the first women’s hockey player to win both an Olympic gold medal and a Walter Cup championship in the same year as a member of the Montreal Victoire. She was originally selected by the Ottawa Charge in the inaugural PWHL Draft before helping elevate the women’s professional game through her play and leadership. This summer, she signed a three-year contract with the PWHL’s Las Vegas franchise, becoming one of the cornerstone players for the league’s newest team.

Beyond her accomplishments on the ice, Hayley is passionate about growing the game for the next generation. Through clinics, mentorship programs, and her work with youth hockey organizations, she is committed to expanding opportunities for girls in hockey and ensuring young athletes have the resources and support they need to pursue their dreams. From her beginnings on a backyard rink in Western New York to Olympic glory and professional championships, Hayley Scamurra’s journey is a testament to the power of hard work, family support, and believing in a dream from an early age.

Takeaways:

Hayley Scamurra's unprecedented achievements include being the third U.S. Olympian to win a gold medal and a league championship within the same season.

The Montreal Victoire's team culture played a pivotal role in their success, fostering an environment where every player felt valued and integrated into the community.

Scamurra emphasized the importance of resilience and adaptability, particularly during a challenging season filled with injuries that tested the team's depth and commitment.

The Dream Gap Tour was instrumental in showcasing women's hockey, allowing players to engage with fans and demonstrate their skills in various markets across North America.

The transition to professional hockey involves significant sacrifice and dedication, as players often juggle jobs while pursuing their passion for the sport.

Haley's mentorship program aims to empower young female athletes by providing guidance, support, and a community to navigate their journeys in sports.

This episode is proudly sponsored by

Official Partner of the Sharpening Your Edge Podcast, Roster Hub

Most team management apps stop at schedules and rosters.
