"Another good thing to do is adapt old favorites. Dementia related illnesses can impact a person's ability to do things as they previously did, so it is important to be adaptable. If the person loved going to a certain restaurant but no longer can, then have the food ordered in from that restaurant instead. If you enjoy playing musical instruments but they can't anymore, then listen to their favorite music with them. Also, it's good to create new memories."

"Well, good afternoon again, swell community. This is Shirley Polk with Share the Care Network and today's topic I'd like to talk about is called Labors of Love. The late Gary Barg, who was the editor in chief of Today's Caregiver magazine and website, wrote an article in his magazine about a year ago and when I read it I thought to myself, I have to share this on my platform."

"And give a house key to a trusted friend or neighbor who can check in on your loved one if it's needed. So, in conclusion, growing older can be a wonderful stage in life. So don't let an accidental injury keep you or your loved one from enjoying this time. If you have any concerns about the safety of your loved one's home, have your doctor or ask your doctor your loved one's doctor for a home health visit referral to evaluate the safety."

"Transitioning to a new environment, whether it is a smaller home, an assisted living facility, or even moving in with family, can trigger anxiety and fear of the unknown to any senior. From the caregiver's point of view, it could be a logistical nightmare. Coordinating a move, especially from far from far away, involves significant logistical hurdles to climb. This includes scheduling, finding reliable help, and managing details without being physically present."

"And here in Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, or USC as it's called, has a program called the Los Angeles Caregiver Resource center that offers support and resources for caregivers that care for adults who struggle with chronic physical or cognitive conditions. So when you feel like you've reached the end of your rope, tie another knot and hold on, caregiver. Don't let go. There is help there for you. I hope you enjoyed these little highlights from the article that I read."

"Share information about available community resources with one another such as food banks, transportation services and support groups is very vital. Developing resource sharing platforms or databases can streamline access to needed assistance. Number three Advocacy and policy engagement Caregivers must actively engage in advocacy efforts to protect the Medicare Medicare, excuse me, the Medicaid Medi Cal programs. This includes contacting your elected officials, participating in public hearings and supporting organizations that advocate for caregiver rights."

"If help is needed with bathing or other personal care tasks, you may want to consider hiring a home health aide to help your loved one. Also, does the home that your loved one lives in need changes for easier access or movement, such such as ramps or handrails or grab bars. Some programs are available for seniors that will provide the installation of these items. Also, ask your physical or ask your loved one's occupational therapist to identify ways to modify the home to fit your loved one's needs."

"A little exercise every day can make you feel stronger. It will increase your memory, and it will make a big difference. So please get out today. Exercise. Even if it means just a little bit of walking or a little bit of gardening in your garden, or just maybe taking a little walk around the corner, maybe to the local Starbucks, pick yourself up a coffee or iced tea."

"And I was thinking about a little something today as I was driving through a section of Los Angeles where I live where when I was a young child, my mother and I and my father lived in a certain area of the city and back, 50 plus years ago, that area was a very nice area to live in. It was very family, community oriented neighborhood. And you could walk at night, you could probably leave your door unlock if you choose to do that in those days."

"Consider very specific needs, such as their meal preparations, their household chores, or any personal care that they may need. Also, present your loved one with options. Any person may feel more empowered and more likely to accept help if he or she has options. For example, if your loved one can no longer keep up a big house, they might choose to hire someone to help them with their chores."

"You. Good afternoon, swell community. Today's topic is on caregiver stress. Caregiver stress is not a new concept. More than one quarter of the adult population has provided care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during the past year. It intense caregivers. Those providing at least 21 hours of care a week have suffered from depression. Heavy duty caregivers, especially spousal caregivers, do not get consistent help from any other family members."

"So today caregivers, I leave with you this thought what is your God given creativity? And if it is to, let's say, journal, be a writer, compose poems or journal things about your pathway on your journey as a caregiver. Write them down and share them. I would love to hear more from you on this. Take care. God bless."
