Engineering Is Back
Coding is figured out. Engineering is back. That's the shift, and it's already showing up in who excels and who gets stuck. Carrick Carpenter, Chief Technology and AI Officer at Aditi Consulting, sits down with Andrew Duncan for a peer conversation about what actually changes inside a services firm when AI rewires the delivery model. Aditi runs 2,000+ employees, 70+ Fortune 500 clients, three continents. Andrew runs Vertice Labs at the boutique end. Same tension, different scale. They go past "AI-native" positioning into the mechanics: why roles are collapsing, what a 90-pull-request engineer looks like in practice, why the people best at AI burn out fastest, and what Carrick got wrong in his first four months on the job. Topics Why engineering is back and what that actually means The 90-pull-request engineer and how to scale the pattern Cycle time as the new delivery metric The capacity paradox inside services firms Full stack leaders and collapsing roles What AI-native actually looks like at Fortune 500 scale Burnout risk for AI-native teams Outcome-based contracts and enterprise procurement SaaS in the agentic era Guest Carrick Carpenter, Chief Technology & AI Officer at Aditi Consulting LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carrickcarpenter (https://www.linkedin.com/in/carrickcarpenter) Aditi Consulting: https://www.aditiconsulting.com (https://www.aditiconsulting.com) Resources mentioned Claude Code: https://claude.com/product/claude-code (https://claude.com/product/claude-code) OpenClaw: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenClaw (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenClaw) Gong: https://www.gong.io (https://www.gong.io) MCP: https://modelcontextprotocol.io (https://modelcontextprotocol.io) Salesforce: https://www.salesforce.com (https://www.salesforce.com) Slalom: https://www.slalom.com (https://www.slalom.com) Vertice Labs: https://www.verticelabs.io (https://www.verticelabs.io) Connect Andrew Duncan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-b-duncan/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-b-duncan/) Vertice Labs: https://www.verticelabs.io (https://www.verticelabs.io) Subscribe Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/64yoHwDdhBd0vik2sev6xs (https://open.spotify.com/show/64yoHwDdhBd0vik2sev6xs) Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gh/podcast/shipping-excellence/id1794200466 (https://podcasts.apple.com/gh/podcast/shipping-excellence/id1794200466) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@shippingexcellence (https://www.youtube.com/@shippingexcellence) RSS: https://media.rss.com/shippingexcellence/feed.xml (https://media.rss.com/shippingexcellence/feed.xml)

AI Is Compressing Time. Your Judgment Is the Bottleneck
In this episode of Shipping Excellence, Andrew Duncan sits down with Christopher Garvis (former AWS engineering leader) to unpack what changes when AI compresses software delivery timelines. They explore why “skills” (constrained context plus tools) are emerging as a more reliable pattern than general-purpose agents, when MCP-style integrations become heavy or fragile, and how experienced builders are using parallel AI workflows to increase throughput without sacrificing rigor. The conversation then moves from tooling to fundamentals: if AI makes execution cheaper and faster, what becomes scarce? Judgment, taste, ownership, and integrity. They discuss why AI amplifies whatever discipline you already have, why “vibe coding” hits a wall at security and reliability, and why follow-through may be the true moat as software becomes easier to replicate. Topics covered - Parallel AI workflows in the terminal (multiple concurrent instances) - Skills vs agents: constrained context, defined tools, clearer outcomes - MCP servers in practice: tradeoffs, token cost, latency, brittleness - When to use CLI tools vs direct commands inside a skill - Emergent behavior: models adapting how they use tools - AGI and embodiment: what text-only systems miss about being human - Why AI increases the value of judgment, taste, and decision-making - How AI amplifies process quality (and exposes weak discipline) - Vibe coding: when it’s fine, and when you must harden the system - The new moat: ownership, integrity, and doing right by customers Guest Christopher Garvis (VP of Engineering and Delivery at Vertice Labs) Links Guest: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christophergarvis/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/christophergarvis/) Duncan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-b-duncan/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-b-duncan/) Vertice Labs: https://verticelabs.io (https://verticelabs.io)

What Past Vendors Got Wrong
In this episode, Robert breaks down the real reason he hired Vertise Labs: his interpreter services business needed a business-purpose iOS + Android app to replace a messy website workflow and tighten day-to-day communication with interpreters. They walk through the early execution details—shipping fast, staying inside scope, and getting a private/non-public app approved (including the “you may need a call with Apple” moment). Then it moves into what actually made the project work: clear deliverables, consistent feedback loops, low politics, and a practical Slack-based workflow. The conversation closes with broader operator lessons: why “happy decks” don’t fix ops problems, when an app creates efficiency leverage, and how communication has to evolve as a business becomes more remote. Takeaways The initial goal: a mobile app for interpreters to centralize workflows. The app is business-purpose and not meant for the general public to download. Private distribution can require extra App Store approval steps (including an Apple call). Staying on track came down to clear scope + clear expectations early. A smooth build needs fast feedback—waiting until the end slows everything down. “Happy slides” don’t help—execution in the trenches does. Slack + regular check-ins created momentum and reduced friction. Stripe comes up as part of the payments stack discussion. Rob references Boostlingo as a comparable point in the space. Best fit: businesses around $1M+ revenue that need efficiency without hiring more people. As teams go remote, communication must get more explicit (less hallway clarity). Chapters 00:00 The problem to solve: why the app mattered 00:40 What the first build phase delivered (and what’s next) 00:59 Getting a business-purpose app approved (Apple call + non-public distribution) 01:39 Why “now” was the right time to build 01:59 On-time / on-budget execution basics 06:19 How Robert found the team (Instagram) + why the message landed 13:56 “No happy slides”: execution vs fluff 15:30 Payments stack notes (Stripe) 16:03 Who Vertise Labs is best for (when an app creates leverage) 19:41 Feedback loops + why speed of response matters 25:21 Recommendation: the ideal company profile ($1M+ revenue, efficiency gaps) 34:30 Remote growth lesson: communication has to level up 36:18 Wrap-up Tags #VertiseLabs #BusinessApps #Operations #ProcessAutomation #InternalTools #iOSApp #AndroidApp #AppStore #StartupExecution #ClientSuccess #SlackWorkflow #ProductBuild #Stripe #InterpreterServices #Boostlingo #RemoteTeams #BusinessSystems #SmallBusiness #SMB #ScalingOperations
