Fix your gut with these two things
A Reese’s from the pantry. A Mountain Dew from the fridge. McDonald’s for dinner. Ice cream before bed.For Ronnie and me, some version of that was childhood.Years later, Ronnie was dealing with acne, rosacea, stress, and gut problems that took more than five years to work through. Doctors, stool tests, functional medicine, diet changes. A lot of trial and error. If 25% of adults have a diagnosed gut disease, then what is the best evidence for helping repair a damaged gut?We went through the research looking for the highest-confidence things someone can actually do. Two kept showing up.We break down both in this episode, including what the studies found, how to actually apply them, and why rebuilding your gut may require thinking less about a single supplement and more about the ecosystem you’re creating inside and around yourself. We also get into:
Why Ronnie believes stress played a major role in his acne and rosacea
The strange two-way relationship between your gut and your brain
What chronic stress can do to the microbiome
Antibiotics, PPIs, C-sections, exercise, fasting, and probiotics
Why your environment, soil, nature, and microbial exposure may matter
The vagus nerve and what breathwork and cold exposure have to do with gut health
Why healing can take much longer than people expect
One of the studies we found was especially strange. Researchers transferred gut microbes from stressed animals into unstressed animals. The previously calm animals began showing stress-related behavior, hormonal changes, and inflammation.Your brain influences your gut. Your gut appears capable of influencing your brain right back.Ronnie lived some version of that loop for years. Worry about his skin created stress. Stress appeared to make things worse. Every breakout gave him another reason to worry.Getting out of that cycle became part of getting better. If you’ve been dealing with digestive problems, skin issues, chronic stress, or you simply want to understand how to build a healthier gut, this episode gives you a practical place to start.Research mentioned:Stress and gut microbiota:https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017...Gut-brain axis, microbiota transfer, inflammation and vagus nerve research:https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1...We also discuss research from the American Gut Project, Stanford diet and microbiome trials, plant-diversity research, and fermented-food research referenced throughout the episode.American Gut Project, 2018Stanford high-fiber and fermented-food research2025 plant-diversity RCT2026 BIOME trialThis conversation is for education and discussion and does not replace medical advice.
