Shrink The Nation is a political psychology podcast about the behavior underneath the headlines. Hosted by military psychiatrists Dr. David and Dr. Robby, the show uses current events as case studies in how people, groups, institutions, and political systems behave under pressure. Each episode looks beyond the news cycle to examine the mechanisms shaping modern public life: cognitive dissonance, propaganda, grievance, polarization, conformity, institutional failure, trust collapse, group identity, and the stories people use to make sense of political reality. The goal is not to diagnose politicians or tell listeners what to think. It is to understand why people believe what they believe, why institutions behave the way they do, and what happens when loyalty, identity, or narrative becomes more important than evidence. Sharp, funny, clinically informed, and grounded in behavioral science, military experience, and systems thinking. Current events are the case material. Human behavior is the subject.

   AI can make you sound like an expert. Does that mean you understand what you’re talking about? Dr. David and Dr. Robby welcome Dr. Adrian Wolfberg, author of Who Leads When AI Thinks? How Leaders Frame Decisions and Exercise Judgment, for a conversation about confidence, expertise, and keeping your own judgment when AI has an answer for everything. They explore the difference between having access to knowledge and understanding it, why confident answers are so persuasive, and what happens when we treat AI as a partner in decisions. From Cyrano de Bergerac to the Kirk and Spock conundrum, they ask what humans still need to bring: empathy, accountability, context, and the ability to question the frame.    Not My Fault: The Psychology of Dodging Responsibility

   Apparently responsibility now comes with a receipt. You can prove you showed up while the mess is still sitting there. This week, Dr. David and Dr. Robby put the nation on the couch to ask why avoiding blame can feel so much like taking responsibility. Republican candidates navigating their relationship with Trump open a conversation about belonging, loyalty, and cognitive dissonance. Congress provides the next question: what does declaring the job done spare us from feeling when the follow-through is still missing? From there, we look at military toughness, the appeal of getting our “old self” back, and what a public execution broadcast would ask of its audience. A discussion of farm debt turns the lens back on us: why can a familiar catastrophe feel easier to face than an uncertain future? There are disagreements, a gym membership that apparently deserved a cheeseburger, and a closing prescription to actually finish what we start. Underneath it all is a question worth taking home: when a story makes us feel better, did the problem change, or did an uncomfortable feeling just go away?    It Wasn’t Supposed to Mean Us

   What do we think being “one of us” actually buys us? Protection? Respect? An exception when the rules get ugly? Military psychiatrists Dr. David and Dr. Robby examine the gap between belonging and protection through four very different stories: • Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s fictional “Brad” welfare ad, and why some viewers object to the stereotype while others object to who’s sitting in the chair. • Amy Dangerfield’s experience in Nick Fuentes’s circle, and what happens when a useful supporter starts acting independently. • Max Naumann’s belief that his German nationalism and military service could secure an exception to Nazi persecution. • An Army sergeant whose wife was deported, and the obligations a government has to the family of someone serving it. These stories have profoundly different stakes. The military family’s case also raises a distinct question about institutional responsibility, without any assumption about the family’s politics. Along the way: attribution bias, selective empathy, bureaucracy, and the social cost of changing your mind. David tests whether Robby’s defense of a soldier’s family extends beyond people in uniform. Robby declares himself a hostile witness. More than once. When a rule hurts someone we recognize, do we find a principle that protects others, or a better argument for our own exception?
