About Sicilia: A History for the Children of the Diaspora and Anyone Else Who Likes a Good Story

This is a storytelling podcast that brings the history of Sicilia to life for families around the world. Created especially for the children and grandchildren of Sicilian migrants, this podcast explores the island their ancestors left behind — from ancient thinkers like Archimedes in Siracusa, to Arab gardens, Norman rulers, village traditions, and the great waves of migration. Each episode is short, engaging, and family-friendly — designed to spark curiosity, connection, and belonging. It’s not just about dates and invasions. It’s about identity. About discovering where we came from. About giving the next generation a story they can call their own. Whether you’re Sicilian by blood, by marriage, or simply by fascination, this is history told as it should be — human, vivid, and meant to be shared.

   How Sicilia’s Emirate Fell Apart

Sicilia may have looked prosperous in the early eleventh century, but beneath the busy markets and multilingual streets, its emirate was quietly coming apart. This episode traces how political fractures, family rivalries, and outside interference shattered two centuries of unity — leaving the island vulnerable just as new powers arrived. It’s the story of how instability opened the door for Byzantines, invited the Normans, and set the stage for one of the most dramatic transitions in Sicilian history. Listen in, and see how a seemingly stable island became the prize everyone wanted next.

   The History of Arancini

Arancini may look like simple street food, but each golden sphere carries centuries of Sicilian history inside its crisp shell. This episode uncovers how rice, conquest, tradition, and family identity all fused into the dish that still divides Palermo and Catania — round or cone, arancine or arancini. Break one open and you find more than saffron and ragù; you find the layers of Sicilia itself. Listen in, and you’ll understand why this humble, burning‑hot masterpiece endures wherever Sicilians go.

   Cannolo: Sicilia’s Sweetest Weapon

The cannolo may look like a simple dessert, but its story stretches back through centuries of Arab influence, Norman kitchens, and Sicilian stubbornness. This episode unwraps how a crisp shell and cool ricotta became a symbol of heritage, celebration, and unapologetic indulgence. It’s a reminder that Sicilian food isn’t just eaten — it’s inherited. Listen in, and you’ll never mistake a mini cannolo for the real thing again.
