Ward Lasso: Diane, a True Survivor — Overcoming Childhood Abuse Through Faith, Hope & Resilience
What happens when a child experiences unimaginable trauma but refuses to give up on life?
In this powerful episode of Silent No Longer with Mesha Paul, I sit down with Ward Lassoe
a psychotherapist and former journalist, to share the remarkable story of Diane, whose life inspired the book Diane, True Survivor.
Diane's story began in London, where she spent her early childhood in foster care before being reunited with her biological mother and moving to the United States. What followed was years of childhood abuse, abandonment, difficult relationships, heartbreak, and challenges that no child should ever have to experience.
But what makes Diane's story so powerful isn't just what she survived. It's how she continued to find the strength to keep going.
Ward shares how he met Diane in graduate school and how a simple classroom assignment eventually became a friendship and the opportunity to preserve her story. Throughout our conversation, we hear actual audio recordings of Diane sharing her experiences in her own words.
Together, we discuss:
The lasting impact of childhood abuse and trauma.
Why survivors sometimes return to unhealthy or abusive relationships.
The importance of having even one safe person in your life.
How faith and prayer can provide strength during difficult seasons.
Breaking generational cycles and creating a different life for your children.
Forgiveness, complicated family relationships, and the journey toward healing.
Finding hope and purpose even when life feels overwhelming.
One of the moments that stayed with me was hearing Diane describe a time when she didn't know how she was going to move forward. Through her faith, she found the strength to take life one day at a time, one step at a time.
Ward also shares how Diane eventually rebuilt a relationship with the mother who had caused her so much pain, and why he felt it was so important to publish her story after her passing.
This conversation reminds us that healing doesn't mean the past never happened. It means we can continue moving forward, find strength in unexpected places, and choose what we want our future to look like.
💜 Your past does not have to determine your future. You are worthy. You are brave. And you are not alone.

What happens when the life that looks perfect from the outside is very different behind closed doors?
In this episode of Silent No Longer with Mesha Paul, I sit down with Mia Hanks, author of Bride-Maid and I’ve Made Plans: A Memoir of Rebuilding, to talk about her experience of leaving a 29-year marriage that she describes as involving covert narcissistic abuse. Mia shares how difficult it was to recognize the unhealthy patterns when she was living inside of them—and how years of being told that she was the problem affected the way she saw herself. Pasted text
We have an open and honest conversation about psychological and emotional abuse, gaslighting, circular conversations, walking on eggshells, control, sleep deprivation, losing your independence, and what it feels like when everyone around you believes you have the “perfect” marriage. Pasted text
But this conversation is also about what comes after.
Mia shares what it was like to rediscover herself, do things she had been told she wasn't capable of doing, rebuild her independence, and finally experience the peace and freedom she had wanted for so many years. We also talk about my own healing journey, learning boundaries, trusting yourself again, recognizing patterns, and realizing that healing happens in layers. Pasted text
If you've ever wondered why it can be so difficult to recognize psychological abuse—or what rebuilding your life can look like after leaving—this conversation is for you.
