   This is my story, this is my song

   I recently realized I never “introduced” myself on Substack! (https://lauriahogle.substack.com) Yes, my story includes 35+ years of chronic illness and pain (more details here (https://laurihogle.com/about/)). It’s not about my story; it’s about our Lord’s love story of grace, compassionate mercy, and all the blessings in Christ that He has given in and through the “longsuffering.” But I’m praying that reading (or hearing (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXP47zUNFo94v7zsp0ZxPYH_gjqtA3kbN&si=ra3hvdZukm8CzbY9)) the first “chapter” of my story will be His gift to you, especially if you’re a young mom who’s dealing with symptoms, just as I was when it all began in 1991 and I became progressively disabled in a lack of diagnosis or helpful treatment. This Nana is here to walk alongside you with prayer, encouragement, and love. Tips for using podcast to help ease our symptoms: I’m a retired music therapist! I created this roughly 30-minute podcast for you (and me) to use when symptoms flare. It includes these Scriptures and hymns, specifically music therapy-inspired to activate our parasympathetic nervous systems, release endorphins, and reduce stress hormone release. * Lie down or rest in a comfortable position * No distractions * Noise-canceling headphones if you have them * Volume low, but audible * Tap on your body in time to the beat if it’s difficult to focus * Breathe to the beat, gradually lengthening your exhale * Worship our Lord!    Is this illness punishment for my sin, Lord?

   Podcast of Scriptures and hymns to help relieve symptoms of chronic illness and pain As a retired music therapist, I know how the dimensions of the music itself can help to release pain-reducing endorphins and autonomic nervous system-calming cascades of neurotransmitters and healing hormones. These podcasts are designed to do so. More importantly, bathing our minds in God’s Word is also critical. May every Scripture, hymn lyric, and musical offering be His healing gift of grace to you. Here are some tips for using the podcast: Rest, quieted. No outside distractions. Breathe in time to the music, into your belly, rising and falling. Close your eyes. Tap your body to help you focus on the sound, surrounding and enveloping the symptom, the pain. Lengthen your exhale. Worship our Lord. I’m now receiving pain treatments that help knock it down to a 3-5 for about two months! Praise God from Whom ALL blessings flow! There are moments in those two months when my body is calmed. Such relief. Then there’s the third month. I can’t easily record or do anything in that month, as the pain becomes intractable again, so I must use these podcasts often.    Lord, HOW can I keep going like this?

   Lord, HOW can I keep going like this? “Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus” (Rev. 14:12 ESV). In my 35 years (so far) of suffering with various chronic illnesses, an incurable, life-threatening brainstem herniation, and much chronic pain, my “how” prayers have been continual, multiple times a day. You too? I could not keep going like this without God’s living and active Word and His precious gifts of songs that echo the truth of His Word. By His grace, in short bits, I recently wrote a fifth prayer book, “Praying God’s Blessings in Christ as We Suffer: Scripture Prayers for the Hardest Days.” (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GT8L2833)It contains daily short prayers drawn from the Scriptures I read in this podcast (among hundreds of others), directly connecting them to other hymns and modern songs. I’m now shaping them into weekly playlist gifts (http://singchristhope.org) for my suffering sisters in Christ to use just as I do. This podcast is something I’ve sought in my own suffering, especially with disabling symptoms of dysautonomia and the severe pain of a Chiari malformation. It is a music therapy-inspired podcast with hymns and Scripture readings, intentionally designed to calm our autonomic nervous systems and enable our Lord’s healing endorphins to release. May God be greatly glorified in His healing work of all kinds, amid our chronic conditions.
