Singularities is a podcast by Andrew Chen and Johan Lam, co-owners of mens clothing brand 3sixteen. It’s our home for long form conversations about all the finer details of the things we’re working on, upcoming special projects, and chats with friends of the brand whose work and perspectives inspire us.
Johan and Andrew sit down a few days after their NY shop’s grand reopening party to reflect on a crazy night and the journey to get there. From the wild crowds to Johnnie Blue espresso martinis, the party felt like the unofficial close to New York Fashion Week. Andrew shares about some of the special details that went into the space and what it took to get the renovation across the finish line. There’s also talk about our next upcoming denim release - the formidable heavyweight 105xk denim - which is releasing in the coming weeks. Tap in for party talk, shop talk, supply chain talk, and a whole lot more.

State of the Denim Address with Johan and Andrew
Johan and Andrew check in from opposite ends of the coast to talk about what’s on their minds, which as of late has been the increasingly complex state of Japanese denim production. They talk about the ongoing struggles of getting 100x back in stock and the brand's journey in navigating the current denim backlog . Andrew and Johan also officially introduce their newest flagship denim - the 5 Series - and the effort that went into developing it over the past two years, while also touching upon the ins and outs of the Japanese textile business and how little they still understand about it after 15+ years. As always, there’s also conversation about how we do things at 3sixteen (spoiler: it’s the slow, tedious way), how running a business is just a series of educated guesses, and why leaving money on the table has often been the smart play for us for the long haul.

3sixteen x Self Edge x Samurai Collaboration
With the release of their collaboration with Self Edge & Samurai right around the corner, Andrew & Johan link up to talk about the project. They reflect back on their close relationship with Self Edge over the years and how it opened the door for their own denim development, and the role Samurai played in their early days of falling in love with Japanese denim. They also reflect on how car culture has played such a large role in the creative direction of the project and what it means to them. In many ways, this collaboration project is a full circle moment for 3sixteen and this podcast is meant to share a little bit of the history and inspiration behind it.

Wesley Scott on evolving tastes, sustainability, and design influences
As our SS24 collection continues to roll out, Andrew sat down with 3sixteen's lead designer Wesley Scott to talk about the season and how it came together. Wesley's been with the company for almost a decade and we wanted to take time to share about his journey with the brand and how his approach has changed - but more importantly, how it's stayed the same. We touch on his time in grad school studying sustainability and how it means different things to different brands. And we close things out with the importance of bringing personal passion and taste into what we do at 3sixteen.

Johan and Josh talk about our 20th anniversary collaboration and how it was a heavy project for Josh to take on because of his deep desire to honor the vision properly. Reflections on 20 Years
Back in May of 2023, Johan & Andrew recorded an hourlong conversation that was supposed to be chopped up for short form video content; the intent was to share memories and anecdotes from our 20 year history in bite size pieces on social media. As we began to post these clips, we started getting inquiries on where the whole "podcast" could be accessed, which leads us here. We've taken the audio from that conversation and are presenting it to you here uncut. The conversation goes many places but the one all-encompassing theme throughout is a sense of gratitude. We try not take what we do for granted and we hope it shows. Thanks for listening and for journeying with us! See you in the new year.
