Sean Mason discusses "State of the Art" Bringing Dance Back to Jazz

Pianist and composer Sean Mason joins Preston Frazier on the Slang of Ages Podcast to discuss State of the Art, his bold new album arriving October 16, 2026, via Taylor Christian Records. Inspired by jazz’s historic relationship with social dance—and conceived during an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and technological perfection—Mason created the album under deliberate constraints. The music was recorded in a single day, with no more than two takes of each composition. Mason is joined by bassist Felix Moseholm, drummer Domo Branch, and movement artists Reyna Nuñez and LeAndre Douglas. Rather than simply performing for the dancers, the trio interacts with them in real time. Their footsteps, voices, body percussion, and physical energy become part of the music, pushing every performer toward a more spontaneous and deeply human response. Mason discusses choosing spirit over technical perfection, treating mistakes as opportunities, recording without sound barriers or sheet music, and the almost telepathic communication that developed among the five performers. The conversation also explores the stories behind “Secure the Bag,” “A Good Day,” “Honey Pie,” “Carolina Waltz,” “This or That,” and “Nightcap,” along with Mason’s work as the head of Taylor Christian Records, the forthcoming video edition of the recording session, and his plans to tour the United States, Europe, and Japan. State of the Art arrives October 16, 2026. Tiwayo on Outsider, Working with Black Pumas Producer Adrián Quesada & Finding His Soul Sound

French soul and blues artist Tiwayo joins Preston Frazier on the Slang of Ages Podcast to discuss his acclaimed 2026 album, Outsider. Tiwayo shares how a two-year creative journey led him to Austin, Texas, where he teamed up with Black Pumas producer Adrián Quesada to craft an album rooted in classic soul, blues, and gospel. In this conversation, Tiwayo discusses recording with an all-star band, collaborating with Doyle Bramhall II and Kendra Morris, and the deeply personal stories behind songs like “Daddy Was Born With The Blues,” a tribute to his late father, and “My House Is Your Home,” inspired by family life in the French countryside. He also reflects on the lessons he learned by moving from a one-man-band approach to a truly collaborative recording process, his upcoming European tour, hopes for a U.S. tour, and the unreleased songs still to come from the Outsider sessions. If you love soul, blues, Americana, and thoughtful songwriting, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss. Topics Covered: * The making of Outsider * Working with producer Adrián Quesada * Collaborating with Doyle Bramhall II & Kendra Morris * Songwriting inspired by family, loss, and fatherhood * Recording in Austin, Texas * Future touring plans and unreleased music Check out: https://tiwayo.com/ https://tiwayo.bandcamp.com/album/outsider Subscribe to Slang of Ages for in-depth conversations with the artists behind today’s most compelling music—where records don’t age out, they age in. #shadeoflivingcolour, #authorprestonfrazier, #lgbtqpodcaster ,#myvinylcollection , #slangofagespodcast ,#blackpodcasters, #mymusiccollection, #totothebandnotthedog , #totoband, #totobook #yesindeed , #yesindeedbook, #shadeofcolour,#musicofficianato This is the Slang Of Ages Podcast—where records don’t age out; they age in. Bill Champlin Interview - Part 2

Part two of this two-part conversation, Bill Champlin continues his fan-driven chat with Preston Frazier, digging into more career highlights and stories. Bill praises the Santa Fe/Fat City Horns for their tight, powerful live sound, spotlighting drummer Johnny Friday and bassist Roshan Westmoreland, and explains how he blends studio vocals into live recordings using Pro Tools' expanded track counts for rich vocal stacking. He then dives into his Chicago-era work, including the twisting backstory of "Please Hold On" from Chicago 17 (passed from David Foster and Lionel Richie to Champlin for completion) and producing anti-corporate anthems like "Plaid" with Peter Wolf. Bill and Preston trace several Chicago co-writes, including a song developed with George Hawkins Jr. that found its way onto a Chicago album, and Bill reflects on his recurring role in the band as the guy who brings distinctive, R&B-flavored material rather than the album's core songs. The conversation also touches on production choices and vocal takes, plus what Bill picked up watching David Foster's piano technique over the years. Bill wraps up with a look at current projects — new Tamara Champlin tracks mixed by drummer/engineer Alan Hurts — and shares news of remastered Sons reissues, available at billchamplin.com/shop.
