[…] It's true that some people washed infrequently or wore filthy clothes. A famous example is Thomas Beckett, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who lived in the 12th century. After his death, it was discovered that his clothes were swarming with lice and other vermin. However, this wasn't typical. It's thought that Beckett, who was devoutly religious, chose to put up with this comfort as a form of penance. Certainly, a proper bath wasn't a daily event, but it's believed that most people had a basic wash at least once a day. They weren't indifferent to matters of hygiene, and they would change clothes regularly. people of a higher social status would have likely been cleaner, washing more frequently and owning multiple pairs of clothes and undergarments.
