Predator 2 (1990) - The Ultimate 90s Sci-Fi Action Chaos & Bill Paxton Cinematic History | Slept-On Cinema
It's easy to tear down movies, but it's way more FUN to ENJOY movies! Welcome to another episode of Slept-On Cinema, hosted by Stan Steamer and GrobeStreet.
This week, we head to the sweltering, smog-choked concrete jungle of 1997 Los Angeles to defend the 1990 sci-fi action sequel, Predator 2. Critics called the film a "senseless and offensive orgy of violence" and slapped it with a brutal 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences didn't fare much better, giving it a 44%. But as true Movie Optimists, we are here to break down exactly why this "Double Under 50" entry is actually a high-octane masterpiece of practical effects and world-building.
As the second film in our massive Alien/Predator triple-feature, we dive into the legendary ensemble cast featuring Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Ruben Blades, Maria Conchita Alonso, Robert Davi, and Bill Paxton. Plus, we highlight the ultimate piece of sci-fi trivia: Bill Paxton is the only actor in cinematic history to be killed on-screen by an Alien, a Terminator, and a Predator!
Episode Highlights & Timestamps:
Intro & The Rotten Premise: Los Angeles is enduring a brutal heat wave and an intense crime wave, leaving LAPD officer Michael Harrigan (Danny Glover) and FBI Special Agent Peter Keyes (Gary Busey) to face a fearsome extraterrestrial hunter with active camouflage.
Box Office Battles & NC-17 History: Predator 2 opened at #4 on Thanksgiving weekend in 1990 behind the juggernaut Home Alone, ultimately grossing $57 million on a $30-$35 million budget. We also discuss how it originally received an NC-17 rating for extreme violence before being trimmed down to an R.
1990 Visual Effects Mastery: A deep dive into Stan Winston’s incredible creature effects and the mind-blowing early VFX used to create the Predator's invisibility. We break down how they fractalized footage of Kevin Peter Hall in a red suit to pull off the iconic camouflage without modern CGI.
BOLOs (Be On The Lookout): We list our favorite background details, from Robert Davi sightings to an unprecedented amount of on-screen sweat, "whirlybird" turbine vents, powdered pain relievers, and the iconic Xenomorph skull easter egg on the spaceship.
Drink Pairings: GrobeStreet pairs the film with "The El Scorpio" (mezcal, fresh lime juice, agave syrup, and muddled avocado), while Stan Steamer beats the LA heat with a straightforward, ice-cold Pilsner.
The Draft & World-Building: Why setting the movie just seven years in the future (1997) was a genius world-building "cheat code" that allowed the filmmakers to go crazy without a massive sci-fi budget. We also praise the terrifying subway sequence, which features a brilliant homage to the Charles Bronson classic, Death Wish.
Bumper Sticker Lines: Finding the best quotes for the back of your car, including "Luck is my specialty" and "Take a deep breath, loosen your sphincter".
Spin-Off Ideas: We pitch a Gary Busey "Briefcase Boys" prequel where his squad tracks the Predator across the globe, and an origin story for the legendary gangster El Scorpio.
Tying Up Loose Ends: We discuss the logistical nightmare of maintaining "sweat continuity" on set, and the wild true story of filming the King Willie alley scene in a rough neighborhood where the crew actually had feces thrown at them and found a real dead body.
