EAT THIS BOOK! feat. Lucy Valentine

Everything is aggressively stupid and evil right now, so Lucy and I just talked about whatever we felt like for about an hour. With as few references to Elon Musk as we could manage. Need to tune your brain to TV static for an hour? This is the episode for you. Energy drinks, television shows, AI slop, manosphere ghouls, edible books, biased steaks, and a sequel to the groundbreaking 2015 documentary Chappie. CW: we do discuss briefly Criminal Minds, which is a pretty offensively shitty show about serial killers and sex criminals. Please feel free to skip ~8-14 minutes in if you (understandably) don't want to hear about the television program Criminal Minds. Working on the next proper Sludge episode too I promise <3 Supplementary materials: Cathy Mitchell infomercials: EAT THIS BOOK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1lZ44dQYmM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1lZ44dQYmM) DUMP DINNERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQB9ervDEEM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQB9ervDEEM) Dog listening to kalimba https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4we73GHH9k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4we73GHH9k)

   Yellow Tree IV

"I hope they are a little bit more than intrigued" The fourth in our series on the environmental and humanitarian legacy of US uranium mines in The Navajo Nation. In this episode, we cover the 1950’s and 60’s. The Atomic Age promises endless energy and domestic convenience for middle-class white America, but is sustained Navajo miners and millers working long days in uranium mines at great expense to their long-term health and that of their families. Mining companies and government agencies fail to inform the Navajo community of the hazards for decades- until it is far too late to deny. *Content warning* for upsetting content, discussions of illness, and reference to SA. "Soup Will Be Your Salvation" The second in our series on the environmental and humanitarian legacy of US uranium mines in The Navajo Nation and abroad. Before we talk about the mines, we need to discuss the historical context of settler-colonial oppression of the Navajo by the United States. Nauru Bonus: Interview with Dr. Julia Morris

Jesse speaks with Dr. Julia Morris (https://www.juliacmorris.com/), author of the book Asylum and Extraction in the Republic of Nauru. It's a great book and tremendous piece of research which deeply informed our series on Nauru. If you haven't listened to the previous two episodes of our series on Nauru, you may want to check those out first. Dr. Morris is Assistant Professor of International Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she researches migration policy with a focus on western outsourcing of asylum processing and offshore detention to other nations- often “former” colonial holdings. Her research has taken her to Australia, Geneva, Fiji, Jordan, Guatemala, Jordan, and of course, the Republic of Nauru. In her book Asylum and Extraction in the Republic of Nauru (https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501765841/asylum-and-extraction-in-the-republic-of-nauru/#:~:text=Asylum%20and%20Extraction%20in%20the%20Republic%20of%20Nauru%20provides%20an,%2C%20workforces%2C%20and%20migrant%20populations.), she traces the path of extractive colonial industry imposed on the island nation by multiple countries throughout its history, particularly Australia. She draws parallels between the industries of phosphate mining and offshore detention, exploring how media representations and discourses in Australia have helped these industries grow and create toxic legacies for Nauruans and migrants. Jesse's Notes: You can donate to support refugees in Gaza at anera.org (https://www.anera.org/). DM Jesse a picture of your receipt and he'll give you free access to some (upcoming!!!) movie bonus eps. The second and final episode of our series on Nauru.
