Small Room, Loud Stories is a podcast featuring conversations with local musicians, bands, and the people who make local music happen, exploring the stories behind the music: the gigs, the chaos, the breakthroughs, and everything that doesn’t fit neatly on a stage.
Musicians always have stories… and some of them are even true.
Follow Small Room, Loud Stories (https://www.facebook.com/people/Small-Room-Loud-Stories/61590179143082/) on Facebook and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/smallroomloudstories/) for upcoming guests, behind-the-scenes moments, and life around the 4½ Inch STUDio.
Singer-songwriter Bill Hudson came to the 4½ Inch STUDio to talk about the Feel Good Tour, a grassroots effort that has spent roughly twenty years putting musical instruments into the hands of kids, schools, families, and communities that need them. That story begins with a trip to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, when Bill Hudson and Al Coffey headed south with little more than some funding, a few instruments, and the idea that live music might make a terrible situation a little better. What followed grew into years of donated instruments, disaster relief trips, unexpected connections, and a network of people willing to help when somebody says, "We need this."But this conversation goes wherever Bill goes. We talk about song circles, paying musicians, the Roanoke music community, the value of giving kids a creative outlet, and Bill's years around Pete and Toshi Seeger. There are stories about alligators, a 60-foot tulip tree turned into a canoe, playing music in places hit by disaster, and what can happen when you notice a need, do what you can to meet it, and then stay out of the way. It's a conversation about music, community, and the strange things that can happen when people simply show up for each other.

Joel McGlothlin - Branching Out Through Music, Science, and Improvisation
Joel McGlothlin spent decades playing guitar before deciding it was finally time to seriously tackle jazz and start playing in front of people again.
We talk about learning music later in life, what jazz musicians are actually doing when they improvise, why some 30-minute jams work better for us than others, songwriting, performance nerves, the local jazz community, and the importance of finding that one person in the audience who's really listening.
Joel is also an evolutionary biologist at Virginia Tech, which leads us into birds being dinosaurs, billions of years of branching evolution, and the surprising similarities between the way species and musical genres develop.
Along the way we wander through Coltrane, punk, Billy Strings, Guided by Voices, too many guitars (allegedly), and why sometimes the best time to start doing the thing you've always wanted to do is simply now.

Sarah Bradbury - I'm Like if You Unplugged a Punk
Sarah Bradbury joins me in the 4½ Inch STUDio for a conversation about songwriting, punk roots, performance anxiety, and learning to make music on your own terms.
Sarah talks about going from playing bass in punk bands to writing and recording her own music as I Choose Izumi, and about the songwriting block that once made her wonder whether she'd be able to write again. We get into Song Machine, Guided by Voices, her DIY recording process, keeping the occasional mistake, and why punk can be as much about attitude and process as it is about sound.
Along the way, we talk about the local music community, musical influences, playing live, the strange things anxiety tells musicians, and giving yourself permission to write the song even when you don't know whether it's going to be any good. It's a conversation about making music, getting out of your own way, and finding value in the imperfect, human parts of the process.

Kevin Vaught - Playing Was My Meditation
Kevin Vaught has been playing guitar since 1968, although life has given him more than a few reasons to put it down along the way. These days, hand and nerve problems have made playing a challenge, but he's working his way back to the instrument that has been a constant throughout much of his life.
Kevin joins me in the 4½ Inch STUDio for a wide-ranging conversation about getting back into playing, the anxiety of open mics and recording, his love of electric guitar and effects, and the impressive collection of gear in his Black Hole Studio. We also wander through musical tastes, AI-generated music, getting older, weed, guitars, recording technology, and plenty of other places along the way.
It's a loose conversation with a friend who has spent most of his life making music, even when life has occasionally made that difficult.

Tides Away: Dog Meat, Creative Limits, and Making Music Together
What happens when three musicians with different backgrounds, influences, and approaches start making music together?
Matt, Michael, and Colin of Tides Away join me in the 4½ Inch STUDio for a conversation about how the band came together, the creative limits that can actually make songwriting easier, and what each of them brings to the music they make together.
Along the way, we talk influences, songwriting, the local music scene, and plenty of the unexpected places a good conversation can wander.
And, somehow, dog meat.
This is Small Room, Loud Stories with Tides Away.

Jason Derek - The Wake We Leave Behind... And What Comes Next
Jason Derek has worn a lot of hats over the years; drummer, songwriter, front-man, teacher, counselor, producer, and lifelong student of creativity. In this conversation, we follow the winding path through local bands, college, teaching psychology, stepping away from music, and eventually finding his way back with a renewed sense of purpose.
Along the way, we talk about the realities of making music, what collaboration really means, why talent alone isn't enough, and how failure can become one of the most valuable teachers you'll ever have.
By the end, the conversation grows into something even bigger: a vision for bringing musicians, artists, videographers, and other creatives together into a stronger local community.
This isn't just a conversation about music, it's about building something worth leaving behind.

Songwriter, attorney, community builder, and host of the Third Street Coffeehouse Songwriters Round, Mona Raza joins us in the STUDio for a conversation about why songs matter.
We talk about discovering music later in life, finding the courage to perform, writing from personal experience, the influence of great songwriters like John Prine and Bob Dylan, and why every song should contain something real. Along the way, Mona shares the story behind one of her most personal songs, reflects on building a welcoming musical community, and even performs an original song live in the STUDio.
