In spring of 2018, a DCI agent named John Turbitt goes and talks to Annette and asks Annette to draw a diagram of the Hazen farmhouse like it was in 92 to jog her memory here. So she drew it. She draws it. Her diagram shows a fully enclosed staircase with a door at the base coming down the stairs. The door hinges on the right and swings away from the stairs. So the landing at the bottom of the stairs is a tiny space, barely deeper than the door itself when open. It's just like a step worth. It's not much. So that means to see into the dining room, a person coming down those stairs would have to open the door, then close it again behind them to see because it's swinging out in their face, in their view.
