Episode 85: Alex Murdaugh

Alex Murdaugh was once a powerful personal injury attorney from a prominent legal family in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. For nearly a century, the Murdaugh name carried influence in the region’s legal system — but in 2021, that legacy unraveled in shocking fashion.

On June 7, 2021, Alex’s wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and their youngest son, Paul Murdaugh, were found shot to death at the family’s rural estate in Islandton, South Carolina. What initially appeared to be a tragic, mysterious double homicide quickly exposed a web of financial crimes, addiction, and deception.

As investigators dug deeper, they uncovered that Alex had been stealing millions of dollars from clients, law partners, and vulnerable individuals — including the family of his late housekeeper. Prosecutors argued that mounting financial pressure and the threat of exposure motivated him to murder his wife and son in an attempt to gain sympathy and distract from his crimes.

In March 2023, after a widely publicized trial that captivated national audiences, Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of both murders. He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition, he later received lengthy prison sentences for dozens of financial crimes.

The case became one of the most closely followed true crime stories in recent years, highlighting themes of power, privilege, corruption, and the unraveling of a legal dynasty.
