Eunice Newton Foote - A Scientific Mind that History Forgot
In 1856, a woman in upstate New York filled glass jars with different kinds of air, set them in the sun, and noticed carbon dioxide cooked. Then she wrote it down: if the sky ever held more of that gas, Earth would get warmer. Her name was Eunice Newton Foote. History mostly handed the trophy to a man with a fancier lab three years later.
Moonie tells the porch-side version — Seneca Falls, homemade cylinders, Joseph Henry reading her paper because the room would not look at her, John Tyndall’s later infrared work, and why a shrug can erase you for a hundred and fifty years. Science without the sermon. Curiosity with receipts.
Stay curious. Keep learning. And y’all be blessed.

Georgia Has Its Own Loch Ness Monster
Move over, Nessie—Georgia has a monster of its own.
Deep in the rivers, marshes, and tidal waterways of coastal Georgia lives the legend of the Altamaha-ha, affectionately known as Altie. For generations, people around Darien and the Altamaha River have told stories of a mysterious, serpent-like creature moving beneath the dark water.
But where did the legend come from—and could eyewitnesses actually be seeing something real?
In this episode of Smart Bites, Moonie dives into the strange history and Southern folklore surrounding Georgia’s very own river monster. We’ll explore Indigenous traditions, Scottish settlers, reported sightings—including one from a former mayor—possible suspects such as sturgeon, manatees, dolphins, and alligators, and the bizarre ”sea monster” carcass that washed ashore on the Georgia coast in 2018.
We’ll also ask a bigger question: Why do we want monsters like Altie to be real?
Whether Altie is an undiscovered creature, a case of mistaken identity, or simply one of Georgia’s best-loved legends, there’s something wonderfully Southern about knowing that something mysterious might still be swimming beneath the surface.
Grab your sweet tea, keep your feet inside the boat, and join us as we go monster hunting on the Altamaha.

Why Southern Porch Ceilings Are Blue
Have you ever sat on a Southern porch, looked up at that soft blue ceiling, and wondered why it was painted that way?
It turns out, there may be much more behind that beautiful shade of blue than Southern decorating.
In this episode of Smart Bites, Moonie explores the fascinating history and folklore surrounding haint blue—a tradition connected to Gullah Geechee culture, African spiritual beliefs, the history of indigo in the American South, and stories of troublesome spirits known as “haints.”
We’ll follow this seemingly simple paint color from the coastal Lowcountry of Georgia and South Carolina into a much larger story of culture, survival, folklore, and tradition. We’ll also separate some of the history from the legends—including whether blue porch ceilings really keep away ghosts, wasps, and other unwanted visitors.
Sometimes history isn’t hidden in a museum or buried in an old book.
Sometimes you just have to look up.
