Welcome to Smart To Fish Wild, the podcast where passion for the great outdoors meets the strategy of financial freedom. Hosted by avid outdoorsman and wealth advisor Mark Candler, we dive deep into the lives of extraordinary guests who have turned their love for nature into purpose-driven non-profits and businesses.
From the rapids of California to the peaks of Colorado, we explore how the wilderness heals, challenges, and inspires us. But we don't just talk adventure; we get real about the business behind the passion—discussing leadership, fundraising, efficiency, and how to build a legacy
When you touch a wild steelhead that just ran an 8-dam gauntlet, you realize some things are too special to ever lose.
In this week's episode, Josh Mills takes us through his obsession with anadromous fish and his mission to protect wild spaces across North America with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers.
We dive deep into the thrill of chasing sea-run chrome, rallying grassroots communities around common-sense conservation, and keeping public water open for everyone.

First We Saved the Fish: Indigenous Community, Conservation & Generational Impact
This week on Smart to Fish Wild, our producer, Joe, joined me for a conversation with Johann du Preez, Executive Director of Indifly, about how fly fishing can become a powerful vehicle for Indigenous community empowerment and long-term conservation.
Johann walked us through Indifly’s community-first approach across the globe—from protecting giant Arapaima in the rainforests of Guyana at Rewa Eco-Lodge to youth-led bonefish conservation in French Polynesia and empowering tribal youth on Wyoming’s Wind River Reservation. We explored their four foundational pillars of sustainability—cultural, economic, environmental, and stewardship—and discussed how building real trust on the ground leads to generational change.
If you believe conservation only works when the people living on the water lead the way, Johann’s work offers a blueprint for what true grassroots impact looks like.

The Rising Generation: DIY Culture, Honest Storytelling & Life on the Water
This week, I sat down with writer, angler, and former Trout Unlimited Five Rivers program manager Cliff Watson for a refreshing conversation on what fly fishing culture looks like through the eyes of the next generation.
Cliff shared stories from his early days hitchhiking across Chilean Patagonia on a shoestring budget to commercial salmon fishing in Bristol Bay, landing a 30-plus-inch resident brown trout in Argentina, and exploring New Zealand's winter river runs. We also dug into his bi-weekly Flylab column, "The Rising," unpacking why Gen Z anglers are tuning out corporate marketing hype and digital influencer noise in favor of durable gear, DIY grit, and genuine time on the water.
If you're ready for an honest, no-nonsense take on where outdoor culture is heading and what it really means to get after wild fish, Cliff’s perspective is a breath of fresh air.
