Clinical Humility: An Important Quality to Look for in a Therapist

What makes a good therapist? Education, credentials, and specialized training matter—but another important quality can be much harder to identify on a résumé: clinical humility. In this conversation, Mandy Friedman, LPCC-S, CCTP-II and Amy Jones, CT discuss clinical humility and why it matters when choosing a medical or behavioral health professional. For survivors of narcissistic abuse, coercive control, and other forms of trauma, this quality can be particularly meaningful when establishing a safe and effective therapeutic relationship. Clinical humility recognizes that professional training and expertise do not mean a clinician knows everything. A practitioner can bring clinical knowledge to the relationship while remaining curious, open to new information, willing to learn, and respectful of the client's expertise in their own lived experience. For survivors who may have experienced relationships in which their perceptions were repeatedly questioned, dismissed, minimized, or overridden, working with a professional who approaches treatment collaboratively rather than from a position of absolute authority can be especially important. In this video, we discuss: What clinical humility means Why professional expertise and humility can—and should—exist together The importance of a clinician being willing to say, “I don't know” Being open to learning and seeking additional information Listening to and respecting a client's lived experience The difference between providing professional guidance and assuming the clinician always knows best Why curiosity and open-mindedness matter in clinical relationships The importance of collaboration between the practitioner and client Why clinical humility can be particularly important when treating survivors of narcissistic abuse and coercive control What to look for when deciding whether a therapist or other healthcare professional is a good fit A strong clinician does not need to have every answer. Sometimes an important indicator of competence is recognizing the limits of one's knowledge, remaining curious, seeking additional education or consultation when appropriate, and being willing to learn from the person sitting across from them. Finding the Right Therapist After Narcissistic Abuse: Beyond Trauma-Informed Care | Part 2

I like “Beyond Trauma-Informed Care” because it captures the central point without suggesting that trauma-informed care itself is inadequate. Finding a trauma-informed therapist is an important step in recovery from narcissistic abuse—but trauma-informed care alone may not mean a practitioner understands the specific dynamics survivors have experienced. In Part 2 of our conversation about finding the right therapist, Mandy Friedman, LPCC-S, CCTP-II and Amy Jones, CT discuss some of the specialized knowledge that can be particularly important when working with survivors of narcissistic, emotional, and coercive abuse. Effective treatment requires more than recognizing that trauma occurred. A therapist working with survivors should understand the dynamics that can develop within abusive relationships—including coercive control, sophisticated manipulation tactics, trauma responses, common triggers, and the effects chronic abuse can have on the nervous system. When these dynamics are understood, survivors may spend less time trying to convince someone that what happened to them was real and more time understanding what happened, recognizing its effects, and working toward recovery. In this video, we discuss: Why being trauma-informed is important—but may not be enough Understanding coercive control and patterns of power and control The sophisticated manipulation strategies abusive individuals may use Why abuse can be difficult to recognize while you are experiencing it Understanding the everyday triggers survivors may encounter after an abusive relationship How chronic stress and abuse can affect the nervous system Why survivor responses can make more sense when viewed through a trauma lens The importance of finding a therapist who understands the unique dynamics of narcissistic and coercive abuse What survivors can look for when evaluating a potential therapist You deserve a therapeutic space where you do not have to spend your time teaching your therapist the fundamentals of coercive control or explaining why experiences that may appear insignificant from the outside can have a profound impact after an abusive relationship. How to Find the Right Therapist After Narcissistic Abuse | Green Flags to Look For

Finding the right therapist can be an important part of healing from narcissistic abuse—but how do you know when you've found someone who truly understands what you've experienced? In this conversation, Mandy Friedman, LPCC-S, CCTP-II and Amy Jones, CT discuss the importance of the therapeutic relationship in recovery from narcissistic and emotional abuse. We explore some of the “green flags” survivors can look for when choosing a therapist or other mental health practitioner, and why finding the right therapeutic fit can make such a meaningful difference in the healing process. Survivors of narcissistic abuse may enter therapy after spending months or years having their perceptions questioned, their emotions minimized, their boundaries violated, or their experiences invalidated. A healthy therapeutic relationship should offer something very different. Therapy can provide a space where survivors are heard, respected, supported, and encouraged to reconnect with their own judgment, autonomy, and sense of self. In this video, we discuss: What to look for when choosing a therapist after narcissistic abuse “Green flags” that may indicate a healthy therapeutic relationship Why the relationship between therapist and client matters The importance of feeling heard, understood, and emotionally safe Finding a practitioner who understands narcissistic and emotional abuse Trauma-informed care and respect for survivor autonomy Paying attention to how you feel when interacting with a potential therapist Why credentials and treatment approaches are only part of finding the right fit The role of trust in the healing and recovery process There is no single therapist or therapeutic approach that will be right for every survivor. You are allowed to ask questions, learn about a practitioner's experience, pay attention to the therapeutic relationship, and decide whether someone feels like the right person to accompany you through your recovery.
