About So Disappointed
Welcome to a brand new podcast about the cultural phenomenon of widespread disappointment. Throughout this series we will investigate a vast array of subjects including Morrissey, The Phantom Menace, corrupt spiritual leaders, the modern-day Labour Party, aliens, and the 2016 celebrity death cull. And that's just the tip of the disappointing iceberg. In each episode we'll ask: why are we so invested in people and things to the extent that we can be angered when they let us down? Why do we care? We'll be talking to you, the listener, about your greatest disappointments. We'll also reach out to psychologists, journalists, researchers and other specialists to learn as much as we can about this fascinating subject – a subject we can all relate to.

S2 Ep3: Can You Separate the Art From the Artist? PART ONE
In this episode we confront a thorny moral issue that’s at the beating heart of this podcast: can you separate the art from the artist? What do you do when someone whose work you enjoy, whose work you love, turns out to be, at best, an idiot, or at worst an utterly terrible human being? Joining us in this moral quagmire are special guest and WWE aficionado Chris Nelson, plus series regulars Eddie Harrison (https://film-authority.com/), Sprite Kirkwood (https://www.alltalentagency.co.uk/profile/SpriteK) and David Myers. S2 Ep2: The Establishment Blues
In this episode, we’ll be looking at how disappointing it is when public figures we like and admire become part of the establishment. That is, when they accept so-called honours such as knighthoods and OBEs. Why does this bother us? It's complicated, nuanced, thorny. Our special guest is the writer, author, artist, and pop culture historian Justin Lewis (https://firstlastanything.co.uk/about/), who joins series regulars David Myers and Sprite Kirkwood (https://www.alltalentagency.co.uk/profile/SpriteK). 8: The Phantom Menace: Last Night a Sith Lord Broke My Heart
In this, the final episode of our current series, we’ll be looking at The Phantom Menace, a film that almost instantly became shorthand for a kind of cataclysmic pop culture disappointment against which all others are measured. And that’s quite an achievement, you have to admit. Our guests are psychologist David Myers, film critic Eddie Harrison (https://film-authority.com/all-you-need-to-know-about-ten-seconds-from-now/), writer, blogger and cultural commentator Alex-Mell Taylor (https://www.alexhasopinions.com/about), and actor Sprite Kirkwood. 6: Aliens: Close Encounters of the *MEH* Kind?
In this episode we'll be discussing the highly probable existence of life on other planets and why no one really seems to care. The 2023 Unidentified Aerial Phenomena hearings, in which three seemingly plausible US military veterans testified under oath, appeared to confirm that we've already made first contact, and yet this potentially world-changing information was met with an almost universal shrug of indifference. In an attempt to find out why, we spoke to psychologist David Myers, film critic Eddie Harrison (https://film-authority.com/), the esteemed scientist Professor James M. Scobbie (https://www.qmu.ac.uk/schools-and-divisions/shs/shs-staff/professor-james-m-scobbie/), and our resident Gen Z correspondent Sprite Kirkwood. It's a pretty wild journey. We'd also like to thank actor Laura Hogg for lending her voice to the episode and, as always, musician Dan Jackson (https://soundcloud.com/djf-682708275) for mixing our theme tune. 3: 2016: Annus Horribilis
In this episode we’re looking at 2016, a profoundly disappointing year in which the Grim Reaper culled as many beloved celebrities as they could, while also finding time to oversee Britain’s disastrous exit from the European Union and the first inauguration of unending human failure President Donald Trump. Was David Bowie the anchor being who stabilised our universe? Did the end of the world start here? And why did Generation Z come together over the tragic death of a silverback gorilla? All these questions and more will be answered. Our guests include.... Obituarist Daniel Nothing: bsky.app/profile/danielnothing.bsky.social (https://bsky.app/profile/danielnothing.bsky.social) Anti-Brexit campaigner Peter Cook: brexitrage.com/rage-against-brexit (https://brexitrage.com/rage-against-brexit/) Author, artist and pop culture historian Justin Lewis: firstlastanything.co.uk (https://firstlastanything.co.uk/) Plus psychologist David Myers and actor Sprite Kirkwood. 2: Morrissey: Heaven Knows We're Miserable Now
In this episode we’ll be discussing Morrissey, an artist whose forthright opinions have, for many, tarnished his reputation beyond repair. What happens when someone who once spoke so eloquently for sensitive outsiders starts espousing views which offend and anger those people? Can we separate the art from the artist? Or is time to bid farewell to them and their work? Our guests in this episode include... 1: The Blair Witch Project : Petrified or Peeved?
In 1999, a low-budget 'found footage' horror film called The Blair Witch Project became a pop culture sensation. It was hyped as one of the most frightening films ever made, and for many it lived up to that hype. But for others it was a massive disappointment - a whole load of fuss about nothing. In this episode we examine the sharply divided response to the film and delve into the complex, fascinating details of why psychological horror works for some people, while leaving others cold. Our guests include film critics Eddie Harrison and Lucia Minoz, and musician Kat Orr. Click the links below to enjoy more of their work.
