Soho, that one square mile at the heart of bohemian, cosmopolitan London, has been the setting for a surprisingly large number of films. In each episode of Soho Bites, producer and presenter Dominic Delargy is joined by a special guest to discuss a different Soho film, accompanied by a shorter, thematically linked item drawing on Soho's rich history of crime, music, art, vice & film.
Guests have included BFI curators, film scholars, crime historians, former Windmill girls, punk musicians, jazz singers and the occasional actual film star.
Written, produced & presented by Dominic Delargy.
Based on an original idea by Dr Jingan Young.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside.
For this episode, we braved the British railway system and went out to the Southend-on-Sea Film Festival (https://www.thewhitebus.co.uk/southend-on-sea-film-festival) to watch a screening of this month’s film “A Taste of Money (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054369)”.
A Taste of Money was produced by the Danziger brothers (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/773807/index.html) and was directed by Max Varnel (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/868817/index.html) (son of Marcel (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/447319/index.html)) and stars Jean Cadell (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0128130/) as an OAP who has recently turned to crime and Dick Emery (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/588635/index.html) as her criminal associate. Pete Murray (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001d747) & Christina Gregg (http://www.cultfilmfreaks.com/2021/02/gregg-interview.html) also appear and there’s a small role for a very young Anton Rodgers (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0734668/).
After the screening, Dom sat down with national treasure, Noel Cronin (https://www.gowr.co.uk/all-water-rats/noelcronin/) BEM, to talk about the film and a variety of other subjects.
Noel has had a long career in the film industry but is best known now as the founder of everybody’s favourite TV station, Talking Pictures TV (https://talkingpicturestv.co.uk/). He also co-presents The Footage Detectives (https://www.tptvencore.co.uk/details/COLLECTION/collection/from-bc-playlist-1717845738050794658/footage-detectives) and rescued A Taste of Money from the obscurity on which it had languished for the last 65 years.
In the second half of the show we meet the offspring of one of the film’s stars. Nick Emery (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5004889/) is the son of Dick and he talks about his father’s early career and his troubled private life.
You can watch A Taste of Money right now on TPTV Encore (https://www.tptvencore.co.uk/details/VIDEO/item/6380730168112/a-taste-of-money) or buy it on the Danziger box set (https://renownfilms.co.uk/product-category/the-danziger-brothers-collection/) from Renown.
Noel’s autobiography (https://renownfilms.co.uk/product/reel-to-real-paper-back-book-a-life-in-film-by-noel-cronin/) is worth a read.
Watch a selection of Dick's work on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC7_d7kF_WaV2EcdA0tqPleogc-A6Ad11) or a clip of his 1972 film Ooh... You are Awful (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwgJFOXFZ8o)

Not a Humphry Bogart film.
King of the Underworld (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0125310/) (1952) stars Tod Slaughter (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0805532/?ref_=tt_ov_3_1) as Terence Reilly - a master criminal who is always one step ahead of his arch nemesis, Inspector Morley, played by Patrick Barr (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0056556/?ref_=tt_cst_t_2). The film should not be confused with King of the Underworld (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031536/) (1939) which stars Humphry Bogart (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000007/?ref_=tt_ov_3_1) and is a very different film all together.
It was not originally made as a film and is actually three episodes of a low budget TV show called Inspector Morley, Late of Scotland Yard, Investigates (https://www.tumblr.com/kwebtv/636946627302752256/inspector-morley-late-of-scotland-yard), clumsily stitched together.
To talk about King of the Underworld, we’re joined by Vic Pratt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vic_Pratt) from the BFI, a man who loves a bit of Slaughter and has a tenuous family connection to him.
Aidan McManus (https://x.com/mcmanus_aidan?lang=en) joins us in the first half of the show to talk about a different, real life king of the underworld, Bernie Silver (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Silver).
Follow Vic on Blue Sky (https://bsky.app/profile/vicpratt.bsky.social) and read some of his work at the BFI website (https://www.bfi.org.uk/profile/vic-pratt).
Next time you're in Foyles, pick up his book (https://www.foyles.co.uk/book/the-bodies-beneath/william-fowler/9781907222726) (available at other places too, obvs)
Listen to Aidan on Portobello Radio (https://www.portobelloradio.com/) and book for one of his walking tours of Soho HERE (https://www.flipsidelondontours.com/). He also does a tour about David Bowie and he came on episode 29 (https://sohobitespodcast.com/episode/29) to talk about him.
Watch King of the Underworld at TPTV Encore (https://www.tptvencore.co.uk/product/king-of-the-underworld-6336200773112) and if that's simply not enough Tod, pick up this box set from Indicator films (https://www.powerhousefilms.co.uk/products/the-criminal-acts-of-tod-slaughter-eight-blood-and-thunder-entertainments-1935-1940-le).
