Bad Bunny Exposed America's Biggest Energy Crime

Last Sunday, while half of America watched my Patriots get crushed, a Puerto Rican kid named Bad Bunny climbed a fake power pole in front of 100 million people and said what Washington won’t: the grid is broken. The dancing linemen weren’t entertainment. They were a funeral procession for a crime scene that’s been burning for eight years. In this episode, I walk through Puerto Rico’s power grid timeline, from Hurricane Maria to Fiona to the $1 billion Congress earmarked for distributed solar and storage, and how that funding was cancelled. I’ll explain who profits from keeping the grid broken, including a utility drowning in $9 billion of debt and the Wall Street creditors circling it, and why Puerto Ricans pay some of the highest electricity rates in America for some of the least reliable power. Then I’ll show you the solution that’s coming from a box you can plug into your backyard: plug-and-play solar and storage, from Raya Power’s pilot to four million balcony solar kits in Germany to new laws in Utah and beyond. Puerto Rico doesn’t have a grid problem. It has a centralization problem, and the answer is millions of small decisions by people who got tired of waiting. In this episode: How Bad Bunny’s halftime performance pointed at a real, ongoing energy crisis The Puerto Rico grid timeline: Hurricane Maria in 2017, Hurricane Fiona in 2022, and the years of patchwork repairs in between The $1 billion Congress earmarked for distributed energy, and the cancellation of that funding by the Department of Energy PREPA’s $9 billion debt, the stalled restructuring talks, and what “energy colonialism” looks like in practice Raya Power’s plug-and-play solar plus battery system: no permits, no interconnection agreement, installs in about two hours Why plug-in and balcony solar is booming in Germany and spreading across Europe Utah’s plug-and-play solar law, similar bills in 20+ states, and the new UL safety certification Why millions of small systems could add up to the equivalent of major power plants without new transmission lines Why this isn’t just a Puerto Rico story Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call: https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat (https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat) Join the SolarPunkPro Masterclass: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass (https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass) Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links (https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links) Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj (http://www.instagram.com/manzerj) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ (https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/) Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro (https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro) ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. National Grid Built Marketplace for Virtual Power Plants: Jobs Exploding Now

Last episode I told you Google’s parent company paid billions for Intersect Power. This time I have another data point, and it’s arguably more exciting, because it isn’t a tech giant making a bet. It’s National Grid, one of the slowest-moving institutions in American business, doing something it has never done before: building an open marketplace where hundreds of companies compete to solve grid constraints using rooftop solar, home batteries, EVs, and smart thermostats. I’ll explain the problem National Grid is solving across 23 constrained locations in Massachusetts, and why activating distributed resources beats pouring concrete and hanging copper. Then I’ll show you how the marketplace works, from portfolio bidding that lets a one-megawatt company compete to the dispatch testing that auditions providers before they get paid. I’ll zoom out to the booming virtual power plant ecosystem, including the aggregators, hardware makers, and software platforms making it run. And I’ll share the numbers that prove the economics: a VPP can cost less than half as much as a new gas plant, and one Sunrun dispatch event delivered 340 megawatts from people’s rooftops in a single evening. This infrastructure is being built right now, and the ecosystem around it is hiring. In this episode: Why Alphabet’s acquisition of Intersect Power signals that renewable energy entrepreneurship has moved from the fringe to the center National Grid’s new marketplace, built with Piclo, for procuring grid flexibility from distributed energy resources The problem it solves: 23 constrained locations in Massachusetts, and why activating neighborhood batteries and flexible loads beats building new substations How the marketplace works: utilities post needs, companies bid, and portfolio bidding lets small players participate The dispatch testing process, and how providers can stack revenue across multiple programs Piclo’s rapid US expansion, and the broader virtual power plant market The key players: aggregators like Voltus, Leap, and Enel X, platforms like Virtual Peaker, and hardware makers like Sonnen Why VPPs are winning on cost, and how Sunrun delivered 340 MW during a June 2025 New England heat wave Why the ecosystem around this marketplace is hiring Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call (map the companies, programs, and opportunities in your region): https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat (https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat) Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links (https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links) Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj (http://www.instagram.com/manzerj) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ (https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/) Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro (https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro) ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter. Google Paid $4.75B for Solar Company Started by 4 People: Build the Next One

The renewable energy transition is inevitable, and it pays more to be early than to be perfect. This episode is the proof. In 2016, four people with interconnection expertise and a thesis that data centers would outgrow the grid started a company called Intersect Power. Years of boring spreadsheets, cold calls, and utility studies later, Google came calling with a $4.75 billion check. I’ll walk you through what actually happened: how co-founder Sheldon Kimber was just a project developer grinding through interconnection applications when he spotted an eight-year gap between how fast data centers need power and how fast utilities can deliver it. Then I’ll show you five “Intersect moments” forming right now with far less competition: interconnection as a service, community solar aggregation, microgrid as a service, residential battery aggregation, and EV fleet electrification consulting. Each one comes with the problem, the gap, the business model, and the revenue potential, and none requires inventing technology or being an engineer. I’ll also lay out a realistic four-phase path for building one while keeping your day job. The revolution isn’t just getting hired. It’s building the companies doing the hiring. In this episode: The Intersect Power story: from four people with a thesis in 2016 to a $4.75 billion Google investment Why Sheldon Kimber spotted the gap between data center timelines (two years) and utility upgrade timelines (ten years) Five clean energy business opportunities with low competition: interconnection as a service, community solar aggregation, microgrid as a service, residential battery aggregation, and EV fleet electrification consulting The problem, gap, business model, and revenue potential for each opportunity A four-phase path from keeping your job and learning the system to going full time Why Jason, a former Enterprise Rent-A-Car manager, landed three job offers in EV fleet software after the Masterclass The common objections (no background, no connections, no capital, no time) and why they don’t hold up Why “early” is a moving target, and how the window is closing Take Action: Book a Free 30-Minute Industry Analysis Call: https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat (https://calendly.com/solarpunkpro/30-min-chat) Join the SolarPunkPro Masterclass: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass (https://www.solarpunkpro.com/masterclass) Connect: Website: https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links (https://www.solarpunkpro.com/quick-links) Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/manzerj (http://www.instagram.com/manzerj) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/ (https://www.facebook.com/SolarPunkPro/) Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro (https://www.youtube.com/@solarpunkpro) ABOUT SOLARPUNKPRO: This podcast breaks down how the clean energy transition actually works: the economics, the opportunities, and the skills that matter.
