Side Quest: The Lake That Released a Deadly Invisible Cloud

On August 21, 1986, Lake Nyos in Cameroon released an enormous cloud of carbon dioxide. The invisible gas flowed downhill through nearby valleys and suffocated roughly 1,700 people along with thousands of animals. There was no ordinary flood, fire, or lava flow. Entire communities were devastated by air that could no longer support life. In this Side Quest, we explore how volcanic carbon dioxide accumulated deep beneath the lake, what may have triggered the rare limnic eruption, why the gas hugged the ground, and how engineers later began slowly degassing Lake Nyos to reduce the risk of another catastrophe. Side Quest: The Fake Royal Family That Fooled the Royal Navy

In 1910, the British Royal Navy welcomed what appeared to be a delegation of Abyssinian royalty aboard HMS Dreadnought. They were actually pranksters in costumes, theatrical makeup, and fake beards. Among them was future novelist Virginia Woolf. Using a forged telegram, invented language, elaborate disguises, and enormous confidence, the group managed to receive an official tour of one of Britain’s most important warships. In this Side Quest, we explore the Dreadnought Hoax, how the prank humiliated the Navy, and why the entire incident looks surprisingly similar to the social-engineering scams organizations still face today. Conspiracy Corner: Chemtrails, Cloud Seeding, & Weather Control (Part 1)

What starts as a simple question about those white streaks behind airplanes quickly spirals into one of the internet's longest-running conspiracy theories. In this episode of Some Topic – The Podcast, Nick and Brett step into the Conspiracy Corner to examine the infamous chemtrail theory, separating ordinary contrails from extraordinary claims while still exploring why so many people remain convinced that something more is happening above our heads. Along the way, they wander through cloud formation, aviation fuel, weather modification, and the strange intersection where science meets suspicion. The conversation quickly expands beyond airplanes as Brett traces the history of real government weather experiments, including cloud seeding, Operation Popeye during the Vietnam War, and attempts to redirect hurricanes. Nick draws comparisons to Agent Orange and discusses the unintended environmental consequences that can arise whenever humans attempt to manipulate nature. The result is one of the show's more grounded conspiracy discussions, where genuine historical events become the foundation for extraordinary modern claims. Rather than simply asking whether chemtrails are real, the hosts explore a far more interesting question: why do conspiracy theories evolve the way they do? From internet rabbit holes and Tucker Carlson interviews to Wikipedia debates, engineering credentials, and government distrust, they examine how evidence is interpreted, how beliefs become interconnected, and why one conspiracy often leads to another. It's an entertaining look at the psychology of belief wrapped inside the show's usual mix of sarcasm, questionable jokes, and wildly unnecessary tangents. Naturally, things take several detours. Nick somehow connects chemtrails to airline economics, Brett explains combustion chemistry with surprising enthusiasm, and both hosts manage to wander into discussions about autism, the CIA World Factbook, Edward Snowden, aluminum contamination, environmentalism, and whether government agencies would actually be competent enough to maintain a secret operation involving thousands of airline pilots for over fifty years. As always, logic occasionally enters the room before immediately leaving again. Whether you're convinced airplanes are secretly controlling the weather, you're simply curious why contrails linger in the sky, or you just enjoy listening to two dangerously underqualified hosts argue about engineering, environmental science, and internet conspiracy culture, this episode delivers equal parts information and absurdity. So grab a bowl of mac and cheese, keep one eye on the sky, and remember: in the Conspiracy Corner, every answer only raises three more questions. #SomeTopicPodcast #Podcast #ComedyPodcast #ConspiracyCorner #Chemtrails #Contrails #CloudSeeding #WeatherModification #OperationPopeye #OperationStormfury #AgentOrange #Engineering #EnvironmentalScience #Climate #ConspiracyTheories #Science #History #Aviation #Government #InternetCulture #Comedy #Humor #FunnyPodcast #EducationalComedy #SpotifyPodcasts #ApplePodcasts #YouTubePodcasts
