About Sorry I'm Late: The ADHD Podcast
I don't know about you, but I'm sick of the DSM-heavy, pathology talk about ADHD & Autism. It's time to reframe the narrative of what it means to be neurodivergent! In this show, I share my personal experiences, knowledge, expertise, & insights about ADHD & Autism, aka neurodivergence, as well as my unique approach to neurodivergent-affirming rhetoric through a spiritual, holistic perspective. It's time to adopt new beliefs, attitudes, & self-talk that are based in self-compassion & acceptance, that empower you instead of hold you back. You're NOT broken. You're diverse.

EP 17// I'm Not Special: Autism & Literal Thinking
"Am I actually special?!" As an Autistic person, sincerely considering this question rocked my world. I had never considered such a compassionate narrative about myself! What if I was actually *gasp* legitimately special? Beliefs about yourself are not innate, they're taught. Or in other words, you are not born with beliefs about yourself or how it influences who you are--somebody taught you those things. Humans have to learn literally everything when you arrive in this life, including beliefs about yourself! And when you have Autism, you're a literal thinker. (Ever been called "gullible?") Young, impressionable Autistic minds may just believe whatever you tell them, if they don't know any better! That means Autistic brains are more vulnerable to adopting harmful, black-and-white, limiting beliefs about themselves and their identity (such as, "I'm not special so why even try?") due to their very literal thought processes. But WHY does this happen? What's the science behind literal-thinking Autistic minds? And when was the last time you questioned yourself, "Who taught me that belief about myself??" Tune in to learn about Bottom-Up processing and how it influences literal thinking in Autistic minds; to consider the paradox of specialness, and to truly ask yourself, "am I actually special?" ------ Helpful Links: Nat'l Library of Medicine article discussing bottom-up processing in Autistic brains HERE (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9412751/). EP 16// Why I Make This Podcast
Why do I make this podcast, anyway? In this episode I share my personal background and credentials, and why this show will always be first and foremost, a passion project borne from pure heart and social advocacy. Being late-diagnosis ADHD and ASD, there are plenty of lessons and advice I wish I could give to my younger self(as pictured in the podcast cover when I first launched this project). Ultimately this show is for the little girl on the cover (young, undiagnosed Amy). I also share: my personal POV of neurodivergence (spiritual, holistic, self-compassionate, empowering) the story behind the name of the show the story behind the podcast art & why I chose it And last but not least, I would be lying if I didn't admit that this podcast is a means for me to share my thoughts on neurodivergence exactly how I want to share them. So if you don't agree with the main message I share about in my show, then respectfully, peacefully, lovingly--goodbye. This show isn't the right match for you. This show is for you if you're ready to break up with the constant self-hatred and negative self-talk, and adopt a (radical!) new mindset reframing your own neurodivergence. EP 15// Minipod: ADHDer's Feel on Full-Throttle - Emotional Dysregulation
Most people have no idea just how intensely ADHDer's experience emotions. In my opinion, this is an aspect of neurodivergence that is one of the most difficult and painful aspects of living with ADHD. People with ADHD (or Autism, even) experience their emotions on a more heightened level than neurotypicals. It's a hallmark of ADHD. And it's actually called, "emotional dysregulation." In this MINIPOD SERIES episode, I share what it’s really like to experience emotions at full throttle, often feeling misunderstood or exhausted by the emotional rollercoaster. I break down emotional dysregulation in a simple way: why emotions can spike faster and hit harder. I talk about how that can show up in everyday life — from crying over something small to feeling numb during something serious. If you’ve ever felt like your emotions are too much, too fast, or too hard to explain, this episode is for you. Emotional dysregulation isn’t drama or weakness — it’s a real biological response and understanding it can make a huge difference. You are not broken. You are not alone. Your feelings are valid, and with the right support and self-understanding, these emotional storms can become a little easier to weather. ------ HELPFUL LINKS: Dr. Sasha Hamdani, MD - Psychiatrist & ADHD Expert, on Emotional Dysregulation (TT video) (https://www.tiktok.com/@thepsychdoctormd/video/7606119820425186573) Dr. Sasha Hamdani's book about Emotional Dysregulation, Too Sensitive - MORE INFO HERE (https://www.drhamdanimd.com/toosensitive). ------ DISCLAIMER: While at the time of recording this episode, I, Amy Neal, am currently a graduate student to get my Clinical Mental Health Counseling license. EP 14// How Astrology Transformed My Take On AuDHD
Most ADHD, Autistic, and AuDHD people wake up every day believing they need to constantly fix themselves. They have been told their traits are a flaw, or something to be fixed or "healed." But what if neurodivergence can be explained in an alternative perspective--one that is more intentional and loving, and not at all disempowering? In this candid episode, I offer my, perhaps "radical" new perspective that just might change everything you think about yourself. I share my journey of discovering esoteric principles (astrology, Human Design, and numerology) and how they have challenged the medical/pathology model of ADHD that labeled me as a burden. I emphasize that these tools can be used in addition to therapy and proper pharmacology, and can help us love ourselves just as we are, without fixing or changing every single day from a place of self-loathing. If you’re tired of feeling broken or hate yourself because you have ADHD, etc., this conversation could be the catalyst you need to love yourself, by seeing your neurodivergence as a purposeful part of your cosmic blueprint. Love yourself first, and watch your life transform. DISCLAIMER: While at the time of recording this episode and writing these show notes, I am a current CMHC student in graduate school. Also, as specifically expressed in the episode, these opinions are my own, and anything you learn should be used to supplement your professional mental health care. EP 13// Advice Column: ADHD Medication
Let's get something straight--ADHD stimulant medication IS NOT m*thamphetamine, nor are they dangerous to take *if you have ADHD, and take them as prescribed.* In this episode of Sorry I'm Late, I share my advice and spit some facts about ADHD medications, specifically stimulants. I discuss the common phenomenon that many ADHD'ers experience after taking a stimulant medication for the first time in their life--rage and grief. It's not uncommon to experience grief after realizing your life has been so difficult and you didn't even know it; grief for the loss of the life you thought you would have, grief about the reality of your true mental and physical capacity. I discuss the stigma surrounding ADHD medication and why it's harmful. I also share my opinion about how stimulants can be used as another mask that society expects from ADHD'ers. Tune in to hear all my perspectives about ADHD medication. EP 10//7 Tips For Meditating When You Have ADHD
“I can’t meditate, I have ADHD.” Yes you can, baby! If you’re interested in meditation or the act of meditating, but you have a hyperactive mind/have ADHD, and find meditation to be frustrating or overwhelming, this episode is for you! Being neurodivergent means that we experience every single thing in life differently. That includes meditation. Meditation can seem a daunting feat for someone with a brain that never stops! I know, I’ve been there. But I’m here to spread the good news that yes, even you can meditate!! And so I’ve compiled all my best tips and tricks how to meditate when you have ADHD. EP 6//MINIPOD SERIES: YOU'RE DOING THIS & DON'T KNOW IT / MASKING & WHY IT'S PROBLEMATIC
Welcome to my first episode of my series I affectionately call, MiniPod's! I've designed these episodes to be quick informational/educational episodes to discuss certain ND/ADHD-related topics that are important convos that need to be had. Today's episode discusses a topic that is a very real issue that all ND's(neurodivergent folks) experience - masking. According to The Brain Charity* (see Source citation below linked under "Helpful Links"), Masking is "...the act of suppressing or concealing neurodivergent traits in schools and workplace in order to appear neurotypical." The article continues, "(n)eurodivergent people who mask their conditions tend to do this by mimicking or mirroring the behaviors of neurotypical people around them, such as their peers, colleagues or friends." In this episode I discuss what Masking is, draw examples of how it may appear in your life, and what to do in the moment when you notice that you're masking. I also bring up the topic of Ableism, and how this form of prejudice is unfair and absurd; how masking leads to burnout, as well as a friendly and necessary reminder that it's not your job to make others feel comfortable when they're around you! You deserve to exist wholly, unapologetically as yourself, without external, people-pleasing (and frankly stupid) expectations that keep you small and miserable! ----- Key Moments: 1:24 Introduction to my MiniPod Series! 2:12 Topic: Masking. Defined, explained. 5:54 Why Masking is problematic. This is why you need to de-mask.... 6:57 "How do I know when I'm masking?" "How do I stop?" Ask yourself these questions.... 8:05 Thank you for listening! 9:55 Disclaimer ------ Hi, beautiful soul!
