143: Sol Smith on ADHD, Masking and the Journey to Self-Discovery

In this episode of the SOULFULL SOUND Podcast, I'm joined by Sol Smith, author of The ADHDer's Guide to Self-Discovery and The Autistic's Guide to Self-Discovery. A certified autism specialist who is autistic, dyslexic and living with ADHD, Sol spent more than two decades as a college professor before dedicating his work to helping autistic and ADHD adults thrive. Together, we explore what ADHD can look like beyond the familiar stereotypes, why so many adults are only recognising it later in life, and how masking, people-pleasing and trying to meet neurotypical expectations can take a significant toll. Sol explains how dopamine, novelty and motivation can influence the way ADHDers approach tasks, why procrastination can become a coping mechanism, and why the strategies that work for one person may not work for another. We also explore the difference between seeing ADHD as a disorder or a superpower, the importance of recognising neurodivergence as part of identity, and what it means to unmask and build a life around the way your brain actually works. One of the most powerful threads running through this conversation is the possibility of releasing shame and self-judgment. Rather than constantly trying to fit a predetermined mould, what might change if we understood our own needs, played to our strengths and created more supportive ways of living? We also venture into the relationship between neurodivergence and intuition, the value of intrinsic motivation, and Sol's perspective on creating a personally meaningful life in a world that can feel overwhelming. In this episode, we explore: - What ADHD is — and why its name can be misleading - Why ADHD can go unrecognised in adults, particularly women and marginalised groups - Late diagnosis, self-identification and self-trust - Dopamine, novelty, procrastination and hyperfocus - Masking, exhaustion and the process of unmasking - ADHD as identity, rather than something to overcome - The limitations of describing ADHD as a superpower - Why monetising a passion can sometimes take away its joy - Working with your strengths and accepting the support you need - Neurodivergence, intuition and reconnecting with the body - Finding meaning and defining success on your own terms Whether you have an ADHD or autism diagnosis, suspect you may be neurodivergent, or simply want to better understand the people around you, this episode offers a thoughtful exploration of identity, difference and self-discovery. 142: Layla Minoui on Music, Healing and the Journey Back to Yourself

What if music could help you feel what you haven't been able to put into words — and bring you back to parts of yourself you've lost touch with? In this episode, I'm joined by Layla Minoui, an award-nominated film and television composer whose work spans DreamWorks, Disney, Netflix and beyond. After nearly two decades composing music to tell other people's stories, Layla began creating music that told her own — a deeply personal journey shaped by her experience with cancer and her relationship with sound, creativity and healing. Layla shares how improvising at the piano helped her move through feelings she had struggled to express, including grief, anger and the experience of being in survival mode. Rather than trying to fix her circumstances, music gave her a space to feel what was there and change her relationship with what she was experiencing. We explore the moment that shifted her perspective on life, when a difficult medical appointment led her to recognise the choice she still had in how she met the unknown. Spending time with her young son reminded her of the wonder, curiosity, play and presence that can so easily become buried beneath the pursuit of the next achievement. We also explore intuition and embodied wisdom, the difference between understanding something intellectually and truly embodying it, and the importance of meeting ourselves with curiosity rather than judgement. Layla reflects on her project *Journey to Rebirth*, the meaning of rebirth as a return to our authentic selves, and her desire to create immersive musical spaces where people can slow down and reconnect with themselves. This is a conversation about music, resilience, self-trust and the ongoing journey of coming home to who we are. **In this episode, we explore:** * How music can express what words cannot * Growing up between cultures and finding a sense of belonging through music * Moving from composing other people's stories to telling her own * Using improvisation to make space for difficult emotions * Navigating cancer, uncertainty and the power of choice * Why healing is a continuous unfolding rather than a destination * Learning to trust your intuition while remaining open to professional support * The difference between intellectual understanding and embodied change * Rebirth as remembrance and a return to the authentic self * Meeting ourselves and others with greater curiosity, compassion and presence If this conversation resonates with you, take a moment to notice: **What helps you come home to yourself?** TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 – Meet Layla Minoui 01:02 – Growing Up Between Two Cultures 04:12 – How Music Shaped Her Identity 05:38 – From Film Composer to Personal Storytelling 07:35 – Creating Music Through Her Cancer Journey 09:28 – Rediscovering the Heart of Music 12:32 – Trusting Your Own Creative Voice 15:05 – Improvisation as a Pathway to Healing 17:17 – Making Space for Difficult Emotions 20:45 – The Moment That Changed Her Perspective 22:17 – Rediscovering Wonder, Play & Presence 25:51 – Why Healing Is a Continuous Unfolding 30:07 – Intuition, the Body & Inner Knowing 33:43 – Creating Space for Curiosity and Compassion 35:27 – What Rebirth Really Means 40:00 – Coming Home to Yourself 55:51 – Meeting Yourself With Compassion 58:15 – Journey to Rebirth & Its Wider Mission ABOUT LAYLA MINOUI Layla Minoui, is an award-nominated film and television composer whose work spans DreamWorks, Disney, Netflix, and beyond. 141: Aja Daashuur on Spirit Guides, Ancestral Healing and Building a Language With Spirit

Aja Daashuur has been connecting with spirit since she was a child. She spent years terrified of it, then years pretending she wasn't. Today she's an internationally recognised medium, author of The Spirit Guide Portal, and founder of the CCCE Method — and she's one of the most grounded voices in this space you'll hear. In this episode of The Soulful Sound Podcast, Aja and I talk about what spirit guides actually are (and how they differ from passed loved ones), why almost everyone is asking for help without ever asking a guide who they are, and the simple daily exercise she uses to help people build their own language with spirit. We also go somewhere most conversations like this don't: the ethics. Consent. Boundaries. Protection. Pressing mute when you're walking through the world. What to do when you're receiving information about someone who never asked for it. And how to stay in a body while staying open. Aja shares what her clients have taught her about the human capacity to heal, the guide who stopped her mid-spiral with one word, and the four years she spent painting the portraits in The Spirit Guide Portal — because she wanted to give her guides the stage for once, instead of only asking them for answers. TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 What healing from the depths taught her about compassion 01:34 A Dark Night of the Soul started all of this 04:07 Childhood visitations, and parents who asked questions 06:06 Turning the light switch off — and back on 08:39 Clairvoyance, clairaudience, and building your spirit language 10:34 "You can ask spirit for a night off" 11:54 What a spirit guide actually is, versus a passed loved one 13:35 The dominant sense exercise: find your baseline 15:28 Why healing and spirit communication belong together 18:03 The CCCE Method: Connect, Channel, Clear, Embody 20:59 The Monday morning problem — why downloads get left on the table 21:50 What stops people trusting their own intuition 23:45 The hawk, the grandmother, and the broken compass 25:03 "It doesn't matter if it's your imagination" 26:36 How ancestral patterns still shape us 27:45 Time is a sphere: healing backwards and forwards 29:45 Grounding: frameworks, protection and pressing mute 33:15 The ethics of consent in intuitive work 36:44 What Aja's clients have taught her about human capacity to heal 38:23 Invested, but not attached 40:22 What spirit taught her that no training could 42:35 "Don't let another certification be your crutch" 43:58 Am I hermiting or hiding? 44:30 The Spirit Guide Portal: where it came from 45:05 Four years of channeled portraits 51:12 Where to find the deck 52:07 The guide who told her to stop the spiral ABOUT AJA DAASHUUR Aja Daashuur is an internationally recognized medium, author of The Spirit Guide Portal, and founder of the CCCE Method™, a transformational therapeutic framework that helps people connect with their Spirit Guides to navigate life, purpose, healing, and personal evolution.
