About Sound of Connection Podcast
English Sound of Connection is a space for real encounter. A podcast about music as a living force in society — and about what happens when people truly listen. Through conversations with musicians from folk, world, and improvised music — and beyond — the podcast explores identity, creativity, and community in a digital age. At its core is a simple idea: Music is a language. A language that is created through listening, participation, and shared experience. The podcast explores: - music as a social practice - learning by ear and shared music-making - tradition in dialogue with the present - artistic responsibility and social impact - the power of live music and connection Sound of Connection focuses on what is often missing: real human connection.

Music, Trauma and Belonging | Nemat Battah #16
In this episode of Sound of Connection, I talk with Palestinian-Jordanian singer, oud player, composer and educator Nemat Battah about music, identity, belonging, trauma, healing and the question of what “home” really means. Nemat grew up in Jordan in a Palestinian family and later moved to Sweden and Finland to continue her musical journey. Today she is based in Helsinki, where she teaches at the Global Music Department of the Sibelius Academy. We talk about the deep emotional language of Arabic music and the Maqam system, and why this music cannot simply be understood through theory — it has to be listened to, lived and embodied. From there, our conversation moves into much more personal territory: Nemat speaks about growing up between Palestinian and Jordanian identities, her family’s history of displacement, transgenerational war trauma and her own long process of understanding and healing. We also talk about her upcoming project Dear Amygdala, in which she explores trauma, the nervous system, family relationships, migration and the parts of ourselves that continue trying to protect us long after the danger has passed. Nemat speaks openly about Palestine, her family in Gaza, living in Europe during the war, the pressure placed on Palestinian artists, and why she wants to be seen as an artist in her own right — not only through her Palestinian identity. This is also a conversation about responsibility: looking at our own patterns, our communities, internalised gender roles, privilege and the places where peace actually begins. And, throughout it all, we return to music — as a place for connection, community, expression and the possibility of meeting each other as human beings. Conversations with musicians, artists and people creating spaces where we can listen, learn, question, improvise and meet each other beyond the usual boundaries.

Dare to be Vulnerable | Vilma Talvitie #15
In this episode of Sound of Connection, I talk with Finnish singer, composer, pianist and performing artist Vilma Talvitie about belonging, vulnerability, creativity and the role of artists in a rapidly changing world. Vilma has spent much of the past decade travelling overland, performing in more than 30 countries and encountering very different cultures and communities along the way. Her music – which she describes as Nomad Folk – brings together Finnish roots, influences gathered on her travels, piano, voice, percussion and her whole body. We talk about what it means to feel rooted, why real human connection matters in an increasingly digital world, and how travelling changed Vilma’s relationship with her Finnish identity and musical heritage. Vilma also speaks openly about vulnerability on stage, expressing anger and other emotions that women are often taught to suppress, and why music can create a space where difficult feelings can be shared rather than hidden. We also explore female role models, leadership, artistic courage, the pressure to define success through money and recognition – and Vilma’s belief that artists have an essential role in bringing people together. At the end of the conversation, Vilma introduces her new album Olio / Alien, an album exploring otherness, identity and societal norms. Learning by Ear, Living by Heart | Maya McCourt #014
In this episode of Sound of Connection, I speak with Maya McCourt - cellist, singer, multi-instrumentalist, facilitator and one of the founders of Flotsam Sessions in London. We talk about growing up in a house full of Irish folk music, West African and South African sounds, classical training, Manchester Music Service, bass balalaika, cello, community music and the long road back to making music on her own terms. Maya speaks about why folk music can feel so alive: because it changes as it passes from person to person. We explore the difference between music as something fixed on a page and music as something that belongs to the people in the room. A large part of our conversation is about Flotsam Sessions - a London-based project bringing together people from around the world through roots, folk and traditional music. Maya describes music as social glue, as a way of creating belonging, and as a human space in times where many people feel disconnected, isolated or overwhelmed. We also speak about Ethno, roots and branches music, migration, identity, women in leadership, soft skills, AI, community spaces, older women in music, and why the future of music depends not only on songs, but on the spaces and communities that allow those songs to be heard. Short Description / Teaser Maya McCourt speaks about folk music as social glue, the power of learning by ear, Flotsam Sessions in London, women in leadership, AI, belonging and why music can help us build real human connection in fragmented times.
A life in folk music | Andy Cutting #009
In this episode of Sound of Connection, Kathryn Döhner speaks with English folk musician and composer Andy Cutting. Andy talks about growing up inside a living folk culture in England, about folk clubs, Morris dancing, tunes in the pub, and learning music through immersion rather than institution. He shares how he went from drums to melodeon, why he taught himself the instrument, how he developed his own style, and why he believes the role of a teacher is not to create copies, but to help people find their own voice. The conversation also explores tune writing, stage fright, the difference between a great player and a great musician, the social role of traditional music, and what it means to keep making music in a rapidly changing world. Andy Cutting is a three-time BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards winner, a leading melodeon player, a member of Blowzabella and Leveret, and one of the most influential tune writers in the European folk scene. Folk und Klassik: Gegensätze oder Ergänzung? Angelika Hudler #004
