[…] It's a mile hike from the nearest dirt road, partially through a dry creek bed. About 70 other of Meade County's earliest pioneers have been laid to rest there alongside Leah, some marked by simple field stones, but Leah was the first, and certainly most famous. Local historian Gerald Fisher writes that, quote, the cemetery was used from 1840 to about 1920, some 80-odd years, when, for whatever reason, it was abandoned. And today, it certainly looks like it. There are gravestones covered in ivy with no discernible paths through them. And many of these markers, including Leah's, are partially hidden by an ever-growing layer of fallen leaves and pine needles. […]
