[…] I talk about squatters in an article on my blog and on another episode of this podcast. It's a bit of a long story. What I'm saying though is that all of this is legal, it's just a bit ugly. So what's the deal with the old rental contracts? Well, the actual issue is that Mari Carmen had an old rental contract that meant she was paying a sixth of the market rate. These old contracts may make up around 3% of the rental market in Spain, not an insignificant number, in other words. Most of the old contracts are for flats in the historic centers of Madrid and Barcelona, and most of the people who have them are pretty advanced in age. […]
