Spare Notes is a music-based podcast featuring conversations with indie musicians that explore the ins and outs of the internal, artistic process. Hosted by music journalist Jonah Evans, each week sees new artists join the conversation to discuss topics ranging from artistic influences to the role mental health plays in art and music.
Art begins before it’s created. This is Spare Notes.
Spare Notes looks at the things that are not so centered when it comes to the artists profiles, and sure, we touch on process, though, ever lingering questions are things like, how does an artist think? How were they shaped? And, what’s their vision? And what are the entities or things attached to those questions?
This segment is called Three questions where Jonah only prepares 3 questions that are related to the artist’s current project. In this episode, he has a conversation with The Male Pattern, which is a narrative songwriting project by Will Schwartz. The Male Pattern released their debut album, I Was Shot in the Heart!, on September 25th via Barely Out Recordings. It’s a character driven, narrative work that explores and exploits Americana tropes to capture its time and place, and it’s a concept album. It’s a beautiful, crispy, sad, and humorous record that’s well worth a listen.

Three Questions with Sophie's Body
Art begins before it’s created. This is Spare Notes.Memory, Curiosity, Relationships, Grief, Family, Hope, Politics—all these things are baked into the artist's brain before they play a single note, before they paint a single brushstroke or create something that is a passive or intentional expression of themselves. No artist's path of experience is the same as another. This segment is three questions where Jonah only prepares 3 questions that are related to the artist's current project.
In this episode Jonah talks to Sophie McMinn of Sophie’s Body. Sophie’s body’s debut album, Zero, is coming out October 30th. McMinn and Jonah talk about one of the singles leading up to the debut album, creation, and meanings of names. What’s in a name? Sophie’s Body is self described as bubble-grunge and I love this line from their bio which says: “Sophie’s Body is not an emo band — they are a blunt-force wall of sound that hits you in the head.” And McMinn says this about the upcoming album, Zero: 'Zero' is a collection of songs about experiences — songs about how I’m feeling. At first glance (or listen), you might not see the connecting threads, but in every song, there is this dark shadow, great looming stress, gnawing feeling of uncertainty, and honest-to-god primal fear of failing before I’ve even had the chance to start.’

Portrait of the Artist: Blums on 'Sunk Cost Fantasy' & Resilience
Art begins before it’s created. This is Spare Notes.
Curiosity, Relationships, Grief, Family, Hope—all these things are baked into the artist's brain before they play a single note, before they paint a single brushstroke or create something that is a passive or intentional expression of themselves. No artist's path of experience is the same as another. This segment is Portrait of the Artist, where the artist is interviewed about their path and about their art.
In this episode Jonah talks to Kelsea Feder, also known as Blums. Her amazing debut album, Sunk Cost Fantasy is out on Take Care Records as of August 7th. It’s a collage, it’s theatrical, it’s a soundscape, it’s a pop record, and it’s a rush of complex emotions and experiences that are sonically explosive. Blums has an extensive background in theater and film, and she has a pop music influence—these show on the record.
Jonah and Feder talk about her background, resilience, personal memory vs art, evolution as an artist, the stakes of relationships, and how Sunk Cost Fantasy came to be this emotive amalgamation of her experiences and reflections.
