Kimi Antonelli Closes In on the F1 Title After Texas

Kimi Antonelli has one hand on the Formula One drivers' championship after a smart drive in Texas, and he could clinch this weekend in Mexico. Todd also covers IndyCar's 2027 trip to Spain, the Talladega finish that divided NASCAR fans, and Kyle Larson's chance to wrap up the NASCAR championship at Martinsville. Antonelli didn't clinch in Texas, but he made a strong strategy call and drove a mature race for a driver who is barely 20. If the title comes in Mexico, he becomes the youngest drivers' champion in Formula One history. Todd also touches on drivers' complaints about the bumps in Texas, the new building at turn one, and the reported attendance. IndyCar has released the second half of its 2027 schedule. A mid-July race in Spain replaces DC, Nashville is gone, and the rest looks similar to 2026. Todd questions how the series went from "not interested in international events" two years ago to calling Spain a landing spot for Europe. He also takes on the push for more ovals, pointing to attendance, sponsor support, and the cost of putting on those events. At Talladega, Larson came from 11th on the last lap to win by a fraction of a second. Fans are split between calling it a great race and calling it a garbage one. Todd is glad the cars protected Joey Logano and Riley Herbst in big hits, but he has little patience for racing that makes big crashes feel inevitable. Next up is Martinsville, where Larson can clinch the championship if he leaves more than 75 points ahead. Championship Weekend? F1's Title Fight Heads to Texas

Could the Formula One championship be decided this weekend in Austin, Texas? Circuit of the Americas kicks off F1's North American run with a new Turn 1 hospitality building, Guinness World Record cowboy hat, and concerts from Maroon 5 and Post Malone. Plus, NASCAR's title picture got scrambled at Phoenix, IndyCar may be headed to Barcelona, and the sport confronts a landmark CTE diagnosis. Formula One returns from its break this weekend at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, and the championship could be settled. Kimi Antonelli's clinching scenario: he needs to win, George Russell must finish higher than ninth, and Lewis Hamilton higher than fifth to keep the fight alive. Todd notes how remarkable Antonelli's growth has been at 20 years old, reflecting a broader trend of young racers showing exceptional maturity across series. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen spent the off-week doing GT3 racing, and Todd says Red Bull should let him — keeping their star happy is the best strategy for on-track performance. Canadian stock car racer Treyten Lapcevich scored a big late model stock car win at the Cars Tour finale, racing for Junior Motorsports. It's a strong rebound after the Chad Bryant Racing incident where team members physically confronted his on-track rival. Lapcevich has cleanly distanced himself from that mess. Reports are circulating that IndyCar has reached an agreement to race in Barcelona, Spain next year — the series' first race outside North America in over a decade. The move would capitalize on five-time champion Alex Palou's popularity as a hometown draw. Todd is skeptical: he wants to see the signed deal before getting excited, noting IndyCar still has underserved markets in the U.S. and would be giving up a prime summer weekend in July. Palou also tested for Chip Ganassi Racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and was near the top of the timing sheets — a smart feedback move for a team that struggled last season. In NASCAR, Phoenix reshuffled the championship standings after bad days for Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin, putting six or seven drivers within realistic striking distance. Talladega is next — a superspeedway wildcard where the strategy is survival for 185 laps and smart drafting at the finish. Post-race at Phoenix, Zane Smith hit Carson Hocevar after the checkered flag. Todd says NASCAR needs to clamp down before these incidents escalate. NASCAR TV ratings remain flat compared to last year, and with fewer races on network television, that trend should concern the series as it looks toward its next rights negotiation in roughly five years. Todd raises the broader question of consumer fatigue with multiple subscriptions and apps required to follow any sport. The episode closes on the announcement that former NASCAR driver and Hall of Famer Fred Lorenzen has been diagnosed with CTE — the first confirmed case in a racing driver. Todd expects more diagnoses will follow as research expands into head injuries in motorsports, and he applauds ongoing safety improvements across all series. 👉 Like and subscribe on the Rev TV YouTube channel and follow Speed Chronicles on your favourite podcast platform. Singapore GP, NASCAR Charlotte & Driver Market Updates

Max Verstappen delivered a perfect weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix, sweeping pole position for both the sprint race and the main event. This edition of Speed Chronicles covers F1's latest software glitch, Lando Norris's costly sprint race blunder, Kimi Antonelli's path to clinching the drivers' championship, NASCAR's rain-shortened Charlotte weekend, and early manufacturer rumblings from both NASCAR and IndyCar. Formula One returned to Singapore for the final sprint race weekend of the 2026 season, and Verstappen reminded the paddock why a fifth title could be on the horizon if Red Bull's car stays competitive. The weekend wasn't without technical hiccups: another F1 software glitch affected multiple teams during the earlier sessions, echoing recent reliability concerns. Lewis Hamilton made headlines by overriding Ferrari's strategy on the radio, opting to stay out on aging soft tires instead of pitting again. He took the heat publicly after losing positions, sparing Ferrari from another strategy controversy. The bigger story was Lando Norris's decision to dive up the inside on teammate Oscar Piastri on the final lap of the sprint race. The move cost McLaren significant points and drew a furious reaction from team CEO Zak Brown. With Kimi Antonelli on the verge of clinching the drivers' title (he could seal it at Circuit of the Americas), the championship picture is nearly settled at the top, though second through fifth remains competitive. On the NASCAR side, rain disrupted the Charlotte weekend. Kyle Larson holds a strong position in the Cup Series standings with four races remaining, but Talladega looms as a wild card. Todd questioned whether the stage-racing format actually helped the Charlotte race or whether natural tire attrition would have produced better racing. Rumblings of a Dodge return to the Cup Series surfaced, and IndyCar continues to keep its second-half schedule under wraps while Ford explores an engine program for 2028. NASCAR Canada is heading into the off-season with the 2027 schedule largely taking shape, including returns to CTMP and Markham.
