S1 Bonus | Halloween Around the World: Where the Living Celebrate the Dea
Halloween Around the World: Where the Living Celebrate the Dead 🎃 BONUS HALLOWEEN EPISODE! 👻🥃 Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and there was no way we were letting the spookiest Spooky Saturday of all pass without an extra episode! This time, JB and Ariel are taking Spirits with Spirits around the world to explore something a little different. What if Halloween isn't just about fearing the dead? What if it's about welcoming them home? Across the world, cultures have developed beautiful, fascinating, and sometimes supernatural traditions for remembering the people who came before us. And we're exploring four of them. 🇮🇪 IRELAND — SAMHAIN We begin with the ancient Celtic festival that helped shape modern Halloween. From the belief that the veil between worlds grows thin to the tradition of inviting departed ancestors to share a meal, Ireland reminds us that Halloween has deep roots in remembrance. 🇲🇽 MEXICO — DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS Next, we explore the colorful and joyous celebration of the Day of the Dead. From marigolds and decorated ofrendas to families gathering in cemeteries with food, music, and stories, it's a celebration of love that continues beyond death. 🇵🇭 PHILIPPINES — PANGANGALULUWA Then we're introduced to a fascinating Filipino tradition in which participants go door-to-door, sometimes dressed as spirits, singing and asking for food, alms, and prayers on behalf of souls in purgatory. 🇬🇹 GUATEMALA — FESTIVAL DE BARRILETES GIGANTES Finally, we discover Guatemala's spectacular giant kite tradition, where enormous, handcrafted, colorful kites serve as a connection between the living and the dead. According to folklore, their rippling sounds help keep evil spirits away. 🥃 SPOOKY SIPS — FOUR COUNTRIES, FOUR POURS! We're taking our glasses around the world, too! Ireland: Tullamore D.E.W. 12 Year Special Reserve Mexico: Montelobos Espadín Mezcal Philippines: Tanduay Double Rum Guatemala: Ron Zacapa 23 Which spirit wins the evening? Let's just say three of these bottles made a much better impression than the fourth. 😂 Along the way, there's plenty of Halloween nostalgia, a few questionable pronunciations, some terrible jokes, and the usual banter between JB and Ariel. But at the heart of this episode is something more meaningful. The stories we share keep the memories of those we love alive. So pour yourself something good, turn down the lights, and join us for a special Halloween celebration of life, death, remembrance, and spirits from around the world. 🎃 Happy Halloween from Spirits with Spirits! S1E11 | Texas — Don't Mess with the Dead: A Haunted Road Trip
Texas — Don't Mess with the Dead: A Haunted Road Trip Everything's bigger in Texas—including the ghost stories! This week on Spirits with Spirits, JB and Ariel are heading to the Lone Star State for a haunted road trip filled with phantom riders, mysterious lights, haunted taverns, restless spirits, and a few things that probably shouldn't be wandering the highways after dark. Our journey begins in the Franklin Mountains near El Paso, where legend tells of a ghostly monk wandering with his donkey. Yes, somehow we've found another ghost donkey! Then we're off to the Devil's Backbone, where travelers have reported spectral horsemen, a crying woman carrying her baby, and strange encounters along the winding Texas roads. We also stop at the legendary Devil's Backbone Tavern, where photographs reportedly fly off walls, jukeboxes play by themselves, and the resident spirits don't always observe closing time. But things get even stranger when we reach Demon's Road and Martha Chapel Cemetery. Imagine driving down a dark road and encountering a little boy riding a squeaky tricycle—with glowing red eyes. Or visiting a cemetery where something reportedly reaches out of the ground to grab unsuspecting visitors. And whatever you do, don't bring anything home with you. Our haunted road trip continues with the mysterious Saratoga Lights along Bragg Road and the restless spirits of Stagecoach Road. 🥃 SPOOKY SIPS This week we're going big with Whitmeyer's Texas Single Malt Whiskey, a barrel-proof, uncut and unfiltered single-barrel selection acquired through a whiskey trade with our friend Clint. We explore what makes American single malt different, how the Texas climate influences whiskey aging, and whether this particular barrel lives up to its Lone Star reputation. Along the way, JB somehow reveals a story about hitting a horse with a car that Ariel has never heard before, and an innocent discussion of folklore turns into a ridiculous conversation about forks. It's Texas history, roadside hauntings, whiskey, and the usual nonsense you've come to expect from us. 🎃 COMING UP: OUR BONUS HALLOWEEN EPISODE! We're celebrating Halloween with an extra episode this month. Stay tuned for more spooky stories and spirits! Pour yourself something good, turn down the lights, and join us as we discover why you should never mess with Texas—or the dead. S1E10 | Pennsylvania — Gettysburg & Rye: Spirits That Refuse to Rest
This week, Spirits with Spirits heads to Pennsylvania, where the history runs deep, the ghosts refuse to leave, and the rye whiskey keeps flowing. Ariel takes us into the haunted landscape surrounding Gettysburg, beginning with the Farnsworth House Inn and its reported collection of resident spirits—including Civil War soldiers, a cranky cook, and a playful young boy named Jeremy. We also visit the historic Sachs Bridge, where legends tell of Confederate soldiers hanging from its rafters, before exploring the tragic story of Jennie Wade—the only direct civilian casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg—and the paranormal activity associated with both her death and birthplace. Meanwhile, JB explores a spirit Pennsylvania was once famous for: rye whiskey. We taste three expressions from Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Rye—Bottled in Bond, Syrah Finished, and, for this episode’s Spooky Sips, the unusual Honey Cask Finished Rye. Which whiskey earns a place on our shelf? Which one might be better destined for a cocktail? And can any of them haunt us quite as badly as Malört? Pour yourself a glass, turn down the lights, and join us for a trip through haunted Pennsylvania. Where the Dead Tell Stories… and the Spirits Are Shared.

S1E09 | Ireland — The Gates of Hell: Haunting Wicklow Gaol
This week, Spirits with Spirits is crossing the Atlantic and heading to Ireland—a land of ancient ruins, restless spirits and folklore passed down for generations. Our destination is Wicklow Gaol, a prison whose history stretches back more than two centuries. Ariel takes us through the turbulent history surrounding Wicklow, from rebellion and the Great Famine to the brutal reality of life inside the jail. Men, women and children were imprisoned within its walls, where overcrowding, starvation, flogging, the infamous tread wheel and transportation awaited those unfortunate enough to find themselves behind bars. And when a place holds that much suffering... You probably won't be surprised that there are ghost stories. 👻 A mysterious woman in black 🟢 An unexplained green mist ⛓️ Apparitions inside the cells 👧 Ghostly children roaming the corridors 😨 Shadows and voices in the basement 🔥 And the infamous entrance known as The Gates of Hell Then it's time for Spooky Sips. 🥃 JB and Ariel pour Redbreast Lustau Edition, a traditional Irish pot still whiskey matured in bourbon and sherry casks before receiving an additional finish in first-fill Oloroso sherry barrels from Bodegas Lustau in Spain. It's Ireland meets Spain—but does the palate live up to that beautiful nose? Pour yourself something good, turn down the lights and join us in Ireland. And if you hear a woman wailing somewhere in the darkness... Maybe don't investigate. Where the dead tell stories... and the spirits are shared.

Then it's on to Central State Hospital, with its underground tunnels, phantom screams, shadow figures and reports of an unseen attacker. Finally, we visit Randolph County Asylum, where the basement is reportedly home to something described as a fast-moving black baby octopus that pinches unsuspecting visitors. Yes... somehow we've found another paranormal animal. Then JB takes over the storytelling as we head into the 325 wooded acres surrounding Hard Truth Distilling in Brown County. We're talking Bigfoot, puckwudgies, the Taily Poe and the mysterious Blue Lady of Story Inn. 🥃 Ghosts in the Graveyard: Ariel attempts to identify four Indiana-connected whiskies blind. 👻 Haunted Indiana: Sanatoriums, asylums, tunnels and things that refuse to leave. 🌲 Into the Woods: Bigfoot, puckwudgies, the Taily Poe and the Blue Lady. 🥃 Spooky Sips: Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye—116.6 proof of Indiana-made rye whiskey that might just earn a permanent spot on our bar.
