Breaking Barriers in Filmmaking with Josh David Jordan

Explore the journey of creating impactful cinema without Hollywood's help. In this episode of the Spiritual Danger Close podcast, Nickolas sits down with filmmaker Josh David Jordan to discuss his unique journey in the world of cinema, the power of family in filmmaking, and the changing landscape of the industry. Josh shares how his family plays a vital role in his filmmaking process. His wife manages marketing and production while his son is the editor. This family dynamic not only fuels his creativity but also brings a personalized touch to his films. "I get really excited when I see the ads and when I see the marketing. I'm like, we did this. This is great," Josh reflects, emphasizing the pride he feels in their collaborative achievements. Josh’s path to filmmaking was unconventional. Growing up as a homeschooled child of a traveling evangelist, he found solace in theater and puppetry. "Filmmaking was like Los Angeles or New York... I wanted to be involved in movies. And so the closest I could get was theater," he recalls. His early experiences ignited a passion for storytelling, leading him to create music videos, short films, and eventually feature-length movies. Jordan discusses the challenges of independent filmmaking and how he has navigated these waters without relying on Hollywood's traditional structures. "The Calvary's not coming. No one's gonna make your film for you... If you keep making it, then maybe people will hop on board," he shares, echoing his philosophy on taking control of one’s creative destiny. Josh’s latest film, which cost only $36,000 to produce, has garnered international recognition, winning multiple awards at film festivals. His approach challenges the notion that success in filmmaking is only achievable through major studio backing. Josh David Jordan’s story is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the importance of community in art. By breaking away from the traditional Hollywood model, he champions a new wave of independent filmmaking that prioritizes authentic storytelling.
