About Sporecast
Sporecast is changing the conversation around mold, health, and the places we live and work. Hosted by five women with lived experience, Sporecast brings together real stories, professional perspectives, research, and honest conversation to explore the complicated realities surrounding indoor mold and water-damaged buildings. We talk about the parts that often get left out of the conversation- health and chronic illness, mental health, family dynamics, home safety, misdiagnosis, remediation, building practices, insurance, healthcare, financial loss, advocacy, and what it actually looks like to move forward after your life has been disrupted. We aren’t here to sell one version of healing or tell you there’s only one right answer. We’re here to ask questions, bring different perspectives to the table, and make complicated information easier to understand. Because this conversation is bigger than any one practitioner, protocol, diagnosis, or personal story. Five hosts. Five perspectives. Real experience. Expert voices. One much-needed conversation. Sporecast is for anyone who has ever felt dismissed, confused, overwhelmed, or simply wanted to better understand the connection between our environments and our health. Sporecast is for education and conversation and is not a substitute for medical advice.

A Journey Through Mold Exposure Ft. Ashley Cutting
Welcome to Sporecast. What happens when the place you call home begins to affect your health, your family, and nearly every aspect of your life? In this episode, Dee sits down with Ashley Cutting for an honest and deeply personal conversation about her family’s experience with mold exposure, unexplained health symptoms, and the overwhelming search for answers. What began as seemingly unrelated health concerns gradually became something much bigger. From debilitating fatigue and unexpected weight changes to neurological symptoms and behavioral changes within her family, Ashley shares the challenges of recognizing that something was wrong when the symptoms didn’t fit a clear diagnosis. As her family’s health concerns continued, so did the search for answers. Ashley describes the frustration of navigating the healthcare system, investigating environmental exposures, and making difficult decisions about their home. But the symptoms were only part of the story. From relocation to the emotional strain on relationships and uncertainty surrounding recovery, Ashley opens up about navigating a health and housing crisis that can be difficult for others to understand. Throughout the conversation, Ashley and Dee explore the intersection of environmental health, chronic illness, inflammation, and family dynamics while reflecting on how their experiences have shaped their perspectives on health and healing. In this episode, we talk about: -The early symptoms that led Ashley to question what was happening to her family’s health -How mold exposure can affect individuals differently, with health concerns extending beyond traditional allergies -Unexplained fatigue, weight changes, neurological symptoms, and respiratory concerns -Neuroinflammation, chronic inflammation, and questions surrounding environmental exposures -Behavioral changes in children and the importance of investigating potential contributing factors -The frustrating journey to diagnosis and navigating a healthcare system that may overlook environmental concerns -Investigating moisture problems, mold growth, and potential exposure sources in the home -The financial burden of medical expenses, remediation, replacing belongings, and relocating -How chronic illness and housing instability can affect marriages, parenting, and family relationships -The emotional toll of losing a sense of safety and stability in your own home -The importance of self-advocacy, asking questions, and making informed decisions Ashley also reflects on how her experience changed her understanding of health, home, and recovery. What she once believed about illness and healing has evolved through difficult decisions, unexpected challenges, and lessons learned along the way. For many families navigating mold concerns, the journey isn’t as simple as identifying a problem and fixing it. There can be setbacks, conflicting information, financial limitations, and a recovery process that looks different for everyone. This conversation is ultimately about awareness, resilience, and the importance of listening to people’s experiences while continuing to seek answers. Whether you’re navigating suspected mold exposure, supporting someone with chronic illness, or facing difficult remediation decisions, we hope Ashley’s story offers perspective, connection, and a reminder that you’re not alone. Spores & Scares: A Sporecast Halloween Special
Welcome to Sporecast. What if some of history’s most terrifying hauntings, mysterious illnesses, and seemingly supernatural events had an unexpected connection to fungi? In this special Halloween episode, Baylie and Kate take a spooky detour into the strange and fascinating world of mold, mushrooms, and the unexplained. From haunted houses and witch trials to mysterious outbreaks and fungi that can manipulate the behavior of insects, we’re exploring the surprising ways fungi have intersected with history, science, and the supernatural. Throughout history, people have struggled to explain unusual symptoms, frightening experiences, and bizarre behavior. While some explanations have involved ghosts, curses, and demonic possession, researchers have also explored whether environmental factors, including mold exposure, toxic gases, and other naturally occurring phenomena, could help explain certain experiences. Baylie and Kate examine historical accounts, scientific research, and some fascinating theories while sharing their own experiences with mold exposure and asking just how much we still have to learn about the fungal world. In this episode, we talk about: The intriguing theory that environmental conditions, including mold exposure, could contribute to some experiences people interpret as paranormal Preliminary research investigating reportedly haunted buildings and reports of elevated airborne particles believed to include mold spores The Salem witch trials and the controversial theory that ergot-contaminated rye may have contributed to symptoms associated with witchcraft accusations Why historians and researchers have challenged the ergot explanation for the Salem witch trials Missouri State Penitentiary, its reputation for paranormal activity, and reports of mold problems within the historic facility The infamous “Demon House” in Gary, Indiana, and questions surrounding environmental conditions and unexplained experiences Borley Rectory, often described as one of England’s most haunted houses, and its history of damp conditions The mysterious 1951 outbreak in Pont-Saint-Esprit, France, sometimes associated with contaminated bread, and the competing theories about what caused it Zombie ants and the remarkable fungi capable of altering insect behavior Saint Anthony’s Fire, the historical effects of ergot poisoning, and its connection to accounts of unusual neurological symptoms The dancing plague of 1518 and the different theories researchers have proposed to explain the event Research examining how certain mold exposures may influence behavior in mice, and the limitations of applying those findings to humans Some of these connections are supported by established science, while others remain debated, preliminary, or purely theoretical. How might the environment around us influence what we feel, perceive, and experience. So, the next time you hear about a haunted house, you might find yourself asking a different question: Is it haunted, or is there something happening in the environment? Whether you’re fascinated by Halloween history, curious about the science of fungi, or just here for a few spooky stories, join us for a Halloween special that brings together science, speculation, and a little bit of Sporecast humor. The Women Behind Sporecast: Live in Austin, TX
Welcome to Sporecast. For the first time ever, Sporecast cohosts Stacey, Baylie, Kate, and Dani sit down together in Austin, Texas, for a special episode filled with honest conversations, personal experiences, laughter, and lessons learned along the way. What began as individual journeys through mold exposure, unexplained health symptoms, and the overwhelming process of finding answers has brought these women together through a shared mission: helping others feel heard, informed, and empowered. In this episode, we step away from our usual format to talk candidly about the realities of living with mold illness, the financial and emotional toll of remediation, navigating complicated healthcare and insurance systems, and learning to advocate for ourselves when the answers aren’t always clear. From comparing older and newer homes to discussing health supplements, travel essentials, and the unexpected challenges of navigating everyday life with environmental sensitivities, this conversation offers a glimpse into the women behind Sporecast and the experiences that continue to shape their perspectives. In this episode, we talk about: How mold-related illness can involve a wide range of symptoms beyond traditional respiratory concerns, including brain fog, skin reactions, and other health challenges The often invisible nature of chronic illness and why recovery can be difficult for others to understand The importance of self-advocacy when navigating healthcare, environmental concerns, and unanswered questions The emotional and financial burden of mold remediation and the difficult decisions families face Why remediation isn’t always a straightforward solution and what we’ve learned from our own experiences The challenges of navigating insurance claims and understanding potential coverage limitations Comparing older and newer homes, building practices, and factors that may influence indoor air quality Why understanding a home’s history, including previous water damage, can be an important part of investigating environmental concerns The role of supplements, personal routines, and individualized approaches in our own health journeys Traveling with environmental sensitivities, including the medications, snacks, and essentials we bring along Why slowing down, researching your options, and asking better questions can help prevent costly mistakes How connection, community support, and sharing experiences can make an isolating journey feel a little less lonely Stacey, Baylie, Kate, and Dani share their individual perspectives, the things they wish they had known sooner, and how their experiences have changed the way they approach health, their homes, and everyday decisions. While each person’s experience with mold illness and recovery is different, one theme continues to emerge: the importance of becoming an informed advocate for yourself and your family. This episode is about more than mold. It’s about resilience, friendship, finding your voice, and discovering that even through incredibly difficult circumstances, meaningful connections can grow. Mold may have brought us together, but the people and the purpose are what keep us going. Whether you’re just beginning to question your environment, navigating remediation, working through your own health challenges, or simply looking for a community that understands, we hope this conversation reminds you that you’re not alone. Expert Interview: AMEA Mycotoxin Testing & Andi's Story
Welcome to Sporecast. What if the biggest problem with mold testing isn’t the test itself but the order in which we’re looking for answers? In this episode, Dee and Laura sit down with Andi Hembroff of Respirare Labs for a conversation about mold, mycotoxins, indoor air quality, hidden building problems, and what families need to understand before spending thousands of dollars searching for an exposure source. Andi’s expertise grew out of her own experience. After dealing with lead exposure in a rental, severe neurological symptoms, periods of being bedbound, and multiple remediation projects, she began digging deeper into the relationship between buildings, environmental exposures, and health. She explains why a home can look perfectly fine while still having hidden moisture or building failures and why answering the question “Do I have mold?” is often much more complicated than running a single test. In this episode, we talk about: • Why symptoms may appear before visible mold, musty odors, or obvious signs of water damage • The differences between common mold-testing methods, including spore traps, dust testing, and mycotoxin testing • Why understanding a possible exposure pathway can be more useful than focusing only on a “positive” or “negative” result • How hidden building problems like improper flashing, water intrusion, and moisture inside wall cavities can be missed • Why testing the rooms where you spend the most time, especially the bedroom, may provide important clues • How thinking through testing in the right order may help families avoid spending money on unnecessary or poorly targeted testing • Why one test rarely tells the entire story of a building • What a “clean” test result can and cannot tell you about an indoor environment • Why the history of the building, water events, symptoms, inspection findings, and testing results may all need to be considered together • How homeowners can ask better questions when working with inspectors, remediation professionals, and medical providers Andi also explains why she believes professionals evaluating indoor environments should approach a building much like a clinician approaches a patient: start with the history, look at the full picture, and then determine which tools or tests actually make sense. Dee and Laura bring their own lived experiences into the conversation, making this a practical discussion for anyone who has ever been told “your testing is fine,” “there’s nothing visible,” or “mold is everywhere” while still feeling that something about their environment isn’t right. This episode is ultimately about learning how to investigate thoughtfully, ask better questions, and understand that finding the source of an environmental problem is rarely as simple as one test or one number. Guest Interview: Applfrittr's Mold Story
Welcome to Sporecast. What happens when mysterious health symptoms keep getting worse and eventually you begin to wonder whether your home could be part of the problem? In this episode, Baylie sits down with “Apple,” known online as Applfrittr, for a candid conversation about health struggles, homeownership, unexpected discoveries, and the search for answers that eventually changed the way she viewed her environment. Apple shares how symptoms she initially believed were allergies became part of a much bigger story. After moving into her home, she dealt with persistent skin and eye issues, allergy testing, concerning carbon monoxide levels, and a growing realization that she often felt different when she was away from the house. Then came discoveries she never expected including hidden files connected to the previous owners that raised even more questions about the history of the home. Apple also opens up about feeling alone while searching for answers, turning to TikTok for support, and how sharing her experience publicly connected her with people who understood what she was going through. In this episode, we talk about: Apple’s home-buying experience and the symptoms that followed Discovering elevated carbon monoxide levels in the home Why she initially believed allergies were causing her symptoms Patch testing and the search for answers How traveling to Cancun gave her an unexpected comparison between environments Finding hidden records connected to the home’s previous owners How TikTok became an unexpected source of information and community support Mold discoveries, leaks, inspections, and unanswered questions Why a home inspection may not uncover every potential problem The emotional and financial realities of leaving or repairing a problematic home Navigating medical care when environmental factors may be part of the picture Why Apple believes it is important to keep asking “why?” The need for greater awareness, accountability, and conversations around healthier homes This conversation is about more than mold. It’s about what happens when your health changes, the answers aren’t obvious, and you have to keep investigating even when you’re exhausted from looking. Apple’s story is also a reminder of why sharing personal experiences matters. Sometimes hearing someone else’s story gives another person a place to begin asking questions of their own. Mold Remediation & Tenting
Welcome to Sporecast. What does mold remediation actually look like when you’re living through it and how do you know when your environment is truly working for your body again? In this episode, Kate and Dee talk candidly about the long, messy reality of remediation, the lessons they learned along the way, and why getting outside, even camping, became an unexpected part of understanding how their environments were affecting them. Kate shares how a bathroom leak eventually led to problems in the crawl space and ductwork, while Dee walks through a remediation that grew far beyond what she originally expected, involving multiple rooms, building materials, the subfloor, exterior wall, bathrooms, and HVAC system. In this episode, we talk about: • Why finding and correcting the original moisture or water-intrusion source matters • How Kate’s bathtub overflow led to damage beneath the home and concerns involving the ductwork • How Dee’s remediation expanded far beyond the original scope • The limitations of relying on a single test, particle count, or lab result to tell the entire story • Why getting multiple opinions before choosing a remediation company can be valuable • What to ask about containment, air scrubbing, PPE, controlled entry, and cleaning procedures • Kate’s experience with small-particle cleaning, including HEPA vacuuming, microfiber wiping, and repeated passes • Why the fastest remediation company isn’t necessarily the right remediation company • How camping and spending time outside gave Dee a clearer comparison between environments and how she felt in them • The emotional toll of remediation and learning to advocate for yourself and your family This conversation is about more than getting mold out of a building. It’s about learning what questions to ask, recognizing how complicated remediation can become, and rebuilding trust in yourself after an experience that may have made you question what you were seeing, feeling, and being told. Celebrities and Toxic Mold
Welcome to Sporecast. Mold doesn’t care how famous you are, how beautiful your home is, or how much money you have. In this episode, Baylie and Kate look at the celebrity mold stories that keep surfacing from Jenny McCarthy, Tori Spelling, Mikayla Matthews, Megan Fox, Ed McMahon, Ted and Shemane Nugent, Candace Owens, Gwyneth Paltrow, Erin Brockovich, Jordan Peterson, and more. Across very different stories, familiar themes show up again and again: hidden water damage, unexplained symptoms, multiple people in the same home getting sick, expensive remediation, lawsuits, and the challenge of proving exactly what caused what. We also talk about the difference between what is documented, what is claimed, and what is still debated because not every mold story carries the same level of evidence. Then we take a deep dive into one of Hollywood’s strangest mysteries: the death of Brittany Murphy. Brittany died in 2009 at age 32. Five months later, her husband Simon Monjack died in the same home, with pneumonia and severe anemia listed in both cases. Brittany’s mother later said she believed toxic mold in the house played a role, while the Los Angeles County coroner disputed that theory. We look at the official findings, the mold theory, the history of the house, its connection to Britney Spears, and why questions surrounding Brittany Murphy’s death are still being discussed today. In this episode: • Celebrity mold stories and what they have in common • Mold, water damage, lawsuits, remediation, and accountability • CIRS and broader mold-related health claims • Why celebrity stories can help normalize conversations around mold • Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack’s deaths • The toxic mold theory and what the official investigation found • Britney Spears’ connection to the house • Why separating facts, claims, and theories matters Sources & Further Listening: Research for this episode included publicly available interviews, news and legal reporting, and public statements, including reporting from People, Entertainment Weekly, Fox News, E! Online, Yahoo, Chicago Sun-Times, WGN, CBC, Robb Report, UnHerd, and others. For the Brittany Murphy deep dive, we also referenced Morbid and Disgraceland. The official cause of Brittany Murphy’s death was pneumonia, anemia, and multiple drug intoxication, and her death was ruled accidental. Mold as a contributing cause remains an unconfirmed theory. Welcome to Sporecast In this special guest episode, Stacey sits down with Emily Rachal, founder of Malachi’s Message, to hear the story behind the mission and the Hope Warrior Gala. Emily shares what happened when she and her family became seriously ill, the changes they began noticing, and the moment they started questioning whether their home environment could be playing a role. She reflects on what it was like to finally leave that environment and begin seeing signs that her family was coming back to themselves. Together, Stacey and Emily talk about trusting what you are seeing even when you do not have all the answers yet, following the clues in front of you, and the difficult experiences that ultimately led Emily to create Malachi’s Message. Emily also shares the deeply personal and harrowing story behind the name Malachi’s Message, how her family’s experience grew into advocacy for others, and the heart behind the Hope Warrior Gala. Buyer’s Remorse: When Your Home Inspection Fails You
Welcome to Sporecast Buying a home is supposed to be exciting but what happens when you find out the home you thought was safe has problems your inspection never caught? In this episode, Dani and Tiffany share their experiences purchasing homes, navigating home inspections, and discovering issues after the fact that left them wondering: how did this get missed? They talk about the limitations of a traditional home inspection, the red flags they wish they had known to look for, and why buyers, especially those concerned about mold, and water damage may need to look beyond the standard inspection process. This isn’t about blaming every home inspector or expecting an inspection to uncover what can’t reasonably be seen. It’s about understanding what an inspection actually does, what it may not tell you, and becoming a more informed advocate for yourself before making one of the biggest purchases of your life. Because when it comes to water damage and mold, the things you don’t know to look for can sometimes become the most expensive things to discover later. Whether you’re currently house hunting, preparing to buy in the future, or dealing with buyer’s remorse of your own, we hope this conversation gives you questions to ask, things to look for, and permission to dig a little deeper before signing on the dotted line. ⸻ Connect with Sporecast 🎙️ Where real experience meets real conversation. When Survival Ends- Grief After Mold
Welcome to Sporecast After remediation is often the beginning of healing but it can also be the beginning of grief. In this episode, Baylie and Stacey have an honest conversation about what happens after survival mode. They discuss the grief that often follows mold illness- the loss of time, identity, relationships, memories, and the life you thought you would have. While physical healing can begin after remediation, the emotional healing often takes much longer. Together, they explore the complex process of adjusting to life after chronic illness, navigating resentment and forgiveness, coping with memory loss, grieving missed milestones with their children, and learning how to move forward when the world expects you to simply “be grateful” and move on. After spending months, or even years, focused on surviving, many people are surprised by the emotions that surface once they’re finally safe. This episode is a reminder that healing isn’t just physical, and grieving what you’ve lost doesn’t mean you’re not making progress. Wherever you are in your journey, we hope this conversation reminds you that it’s okay to grieve what mold took from you while still celebrating how far you’ve come. Both can exist at the same time. They discuss the sudden behavioral changes that turned their families’ lives upside down, the symptoms that were initially misunderstood, and the long road to finding answers. Together, they reflect on the signs they wish they had recognized sooner, the grief and uncertainty that came with watching their children struggle, and the hope that came from finally understanding what was happening. This conversation also explores the practical steps they’ve taken to support their children’s healing, the importance of trusting your instincts as a parent, and why early recognition can make such a meaningful difference. Mold Illness & Partner Dismissal
Welcome to Sporecast. In this episode, Kate and Timberly have an honest conversation about one of the most painful and often overlooked parts of mold illness: feeling dismissed by the person you need most. They explore medical gaslighting, what it feels like to have your symptoms minimized or questioned, and how repeated dismissal can affect trust, emotional safety, and relationships. They also discuss why many people experiencing mold illness begin to question their own reality after being told “it’s all in your head.” Together, they unpack how chronic invalidation from a partner can become emotionally harmful, why so many relationships struggle during chronic illness, and what it means to advocate for yourself when no one else seems to understand.
