In this episode, Dane traces his path from the Garfield Boys Club and collegiate wrestling to co-founding Apex Wrestling School and developing a deeper interest in the mental health needs of athletes.
Dane discusses his doctoral research and the ATHLETE program, a coach education framework designed to help coaches better understand, support, and hold athletes accountable without requiring coaches to become mental health professionals. The framework addresses athlete identity, goal setting, habits, life purpose, emotional intelligence, trust, and empowerment through accountability.
The conversation also explores why teachers may be particularly well prepared to coach, how coaches can balance toughness with care, and why supporting mental health does not mean lowering expectations. They also get into the real-world stuff that makes or breaks teams—parents “putting holes in the boat,” the dreaded car ride home, keeping sport fun (yes, ice cream after a tough loss), why so much “coach education” turns into risk management, and a fascinating look at how USA Soccer’s licensing system evaluates coaches.
