The Stalker Who Targeted Steven Spielberg

This is an experimental podcast series. All content has been created using A.I. tools. Not all information may be factually correct and the hosts may occasionally suffer AI Hallucinations and fabricate information entirely disconnected from reality.  Independent fact-checking is advised. Hollywood fame comes with fans, fortune and the occasional autograph hunter. But what happens when admiration twists into a terrifying obsession? Charlie & Jack delve into the chilling case of Jonathan Norman, whose fixation on legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg spiralled into a disturbing plan involving delusions, deception and a potentially deadly confrontation. From Norman’s troubled past and escalating violence to the shocking discoveries that exposed his intentions, this is a story that reveals just how dangerous obsession can become. But this case wasn't just about one Hollywood heavyweight and a very unwelcome visitor. It helped shape a landmark legal battle over what stalking really means, challenging the idea that victims must know they're being targeted to experience genuine fear. Charlie & Jack explore the psychology behind celebrity stalking, the failures that allowed Norman to get dangerously close, and the modern threats lurking in our digital world. One thing’s certain: if you're planning to get adopted by Steven Spielberg, turning up uninvited with handcuffs and a questionable game plan probably isn't the way to get a foot in the door! When admiration becomes obsession: The disturbing psychology of a fixation that blurs the line between delusion and reality. A landmark case that changed the law: How the Spielberg case challenged the legal understanding of fear and stalking. The ultimate Hollywood nightmare: How a determined stalker exploited gaps in the system — and why better gates alone can't solve a deeper problem. CHARLIE WEST Charlie has a lifelong fascination for the psychology behind criminal obsession. Known for her sharp wit, fearless opinions and ability to find humour in even the darkest conversations, she's never afraid to challenge accepted narratives or ask the awkward questions others avoid! Stalker Spotlight: Charlie's favourite stalker is the bizarre story of the "Hollywood Letter Stalker"; a woman who became convinced she was destined to marry a famous actor, sending thousands of letters over several years. The case perfectly illustrates the blurred line between fantasy and dangerous fixation, and remains one of the examples Charlie returns to when discussing how obsession can spiral into criminal behaviour. JACK MERCER Jack is a former investigative analyst with a deep-rooted interest in human psychology, particularly the patterns of behaviour that lead to obsession, fixation and control. Calm, measured and highly credible, he brings structure and clarity to even the most disturbing cases, often translating chaotic behaviour into understandable psychological frameworks. Stalker Spotlight: Jack's favourite stalker is the case is of the “Watcher Letters” in New Jersey, where an unknown individual sent increasingly unsettling letters to a suburban family over several years. For Jack, the case is a stark example of how anonymity, patience and psychological manipulation can create fear without ever needing physical contact. Not all information may be factually correct and the hosts may occasionally suffer AI Hallucinations and fabricate information entirely disconnected from reality.  Independent fact-checking is advised. What happens when a Hollywood obsession spirals into one of the most shocking crimes in American history? Charlie West and Jack Mercer take a deep dive into the disturbing story of John Hinckley Jr., the troubled loner whose fixation on Taxi Driver star Jodie Foster culminated in the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981. From creepy letters and relentless phone calls to a delusion that turned a movie character’s fantasy into a real-life nightmare, Charlie & Jack uncover the warning signs, missed opportunities and tragic consequences behind an obsession that changed lives forever. But this story goes far beyond one man and his fixation. From Jodie Foster’s fight to reclaim her privacy to the dramatic events inside the Washington Hilton, the trial that transformed America’s insanity defence and the unsettling question of how modern technology can fuel obsessions, this episode explores the truth behind the obsession. And after all that darkness, there’s one final twist: decades later, Hinckley would try to reinvent himself as a musician. Turns out, shooting for stardom can go spectacularly wrong when you take it a little too literally. A movie became a mission: How Taxi Driver became entangled with Hinckley’s delusions about Jodie Foster, with devastating consequences. Six shots. One and a half seconds. A lifetime of consequences: The assassination attempt that nearly killed Reagan and left lasting scars on its victims. The obsession never stays in the past: From a landmark insanity verdict to today's algorithm-driven parasocial relationships, the case raises uncomfortable questions about where fixation ends and danger begins. CHARLIE WEST Charlie has a lifelong fascination for the psychology behind criminal obsession. Not all information may be factually correct and the hosts may occasionally suffer AI Hallucinations and fabricate information entirely disconnected from reality.  Independent fact-checking is advised. Universities should be places to find yourself, not lose your mind. But what happens when the search for friendship, belonging and success puts you directly in the path of someone determined to control you? Charlie West and Jack Mercer dive into the disturbing world of campus obsession, from Larry Ray's shocking exploitation of students at Sarah Lawrence College to secretive cult recruitment tactics targeting vulnerable young people. They also uncover the unsettling reality of students stalking professors, academic power plays, and the abuse of authority that can turn a dream education into a waking nightmare. But the danger doesn't always come from strangers lurking in the shadows. Sometimes it's the charming mentor, the overly attentive new friend, or the person who just seems to understand you a little too well. Charlie and Jack explore the psychological tricks predators use, why intelligence offers no immunity, and how universities can better protect the people in their care. So, if someone offers you free coffee, unconditional friendship and the secret to unlocking the universe's mysteries, maybe check their credentials before signing up for the Tuesday night study group. 3 memorable takeaways The ultimate con: Larry Ray turned a college dorm into the centre of a coercive criminal operation, proving that even highly intelligent people can be manipulated. When admiration becomes obsession: Student stalking isn't always a crush gone too far. It can become intimidation, extortion and a threat to personal safety. Power creates opportunity: From cult leaders to abusive academics, predators thrive when victims are isolated and institutions choose reputation over accountability. It's a story of celebrity, obsession, rivalry and the terrifying consequences of believing you know someone you've never met. All that from watching tennis on TV. Suddenly, “being a fan” sounds like a fairly modest ambition. 🔪 A routine changeover became one of sport's most infamous security failures. 🏆 Seles returned to win another Grand Slam, but her career was never quite the same. 👀 The attack exposed just how dangerous parasocial obsession can become. Charlie West and Jack Mercer go beyond the infamous headlines to uncover the tragic story of Margaret Mary Ray, the woman whose obsession with David Letterman made her a national punchline. From stealing Letterman’s Porsche and repeatedly entering his home to later fixating on NASA astronaut Story Musgrave, her extraordinary behaviour was rooted in severe mental illness and a devastating family history of schizophrenia. In this episode of Stalkers: The Truth Behind the Obsession, Charlie & Jack examine erotomania, the failures of the mental-health and legal systems, and the human cost hidden beneath years of tabloid jokes. It’s a story about obsession, illness, fear and ultimately tragedy — although, somehow, it also involves a stolen Porsche, a $3 toll, cookies, Jack Daniel’s and a garden-hose shower at 3 a.m. You couldn’t make it up. 3 memorable moments The $100,000 Porsche and the $3 toll: Ray allegedly steals Letterman’s Porsche, only to be stopped because she can’t pay the toll. “Mrs. Letterman”: Her delusion was so deeply fixed that she genuinely believed she and Letterman were married — and reportedly convinced contractors at his home that she was the lady of the house. The 3 a.m. garden-hose incident: Her later obsession with astronaut Story Musgrave culminated with him discovering her showering in his garden at three in the morning. The Stalker Who Wanted to Be Famous : Arthur Bremer

This is an experimental podcast series. All content has been created using A.I. tools. Not all information may be factually correct and the hosts may occasionally suffer AI Hallucinations and fabricate information entirely disconnected from reality.  Independent fact-checking is advised. Arthur Bremer wanted to assassinate Richard Nixon. When security made that impossible, he turned his attention to George Wallace—and on May 15, 1972, shot the presidential candidate at point-blank range. But the story behind the shooting is far stranger than a simple political assassination attempt: Bremer was a profoundly isolated man obsessed with fame, armed with an unsettling diary and apparently able to spend money far beyond his modest means. The fallout would stretch far beyond that Maryland shopping centre. Bremer’s diary inspired Taxi Driver, which in turn helped inspire John Hinckley Jr.’s attempt on Ronald Reagan. And somewhere in an archive sits another 148 pages of Bremer’s writings that the public has never seen. The only thing more unsettling than the diary we know about may be the one we don't—although, thankfully, Charlie and Jack didn't have to read it over room service at the Waldorf. He originally wanted Nixon—but security forced a change of target. His diary became the psychological blueprint for Taxi Driver. 148 pages of his original writings remain sealed in an archive. Not all information may be factually correct and the hosts may occasionally suffer AI Hallucinations and fabricate information entirely disconnected from reality.  Independent fact-checking is advised. On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was murdered outside the Dakota by Mark David Chapman—a deeply troubled man whose obsession with fame, identity, religion, The Catcher in the Rye, and Lennon himself had been building for years. Charlie West and Jack Mercer trace Chapman’s disturbing journey from troubled childhood and psychiatric crisis to the calculated journey across America that culminated in one of the most infamous murders in music history. But this isn’t just the story of Lennon’s killer. It’s the story of how one act permanently changed the relationship between celebrities and their fans, helping usher in the age of bodyguards, threat assessment, and impenetrable security bubbles. We also examine the bizarre details surrounding Chapman’s crime, his ever-changing explanations, and the chilling celebrity hit list that might have rewritten rock history—because apparently being second on someone’s murder list is one way to get a very bad concert review. Memorable moments 🎸 The autograph: Lennon signed Chapman’s copy of Double Fantasy just hours before Chapman shot him. 📖 The book: Chapman was carrying The Catcher in the Rye when he committed the murder—and calmly read it while waiting for police. 🎭 The alternate targets: Chapman’s list reportedly included other famous names, including Johnny Carson, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul McCartney and David Bowie. For seven years, Lily Allen endured an escalating campaign of stalking that began with bizarre tweets and ended with a terrifying home invasion. Charlie and Jack trace the case from its earliest warning signs through police reports, court records, psychiatric evidence, and Lily's own interviews, exploring how repeated opportunities to intervene were missed before the danger reached its devastating climax. This episode examines the complex intersection of stalking, celebrity, mental illness, and the justice system, asking difficult questions about where institutions failed both the victim and the perpetrator. It's a story that's equal parts heartbreaking, infuriating, and deeply thought-provoking... and we promise next week's episode contains significantly fewer spiral letters and much better sleeping prospects.
