[…] There's something in the zeitgeist in the 18th century where you could contextualise this and look at the rise of the European novel. And if you look at the titles of lots of the famous novels at that point, they're things like Tom Jones, Tristram Shandy, Mole Flanders. These are individual stories. And I think Hogarth, in pictorial form, is doing something very similar. And we should be slightly resistant to just accept this, because in a way... this is how Hogarth is generally viewed. But there was a later critic called Charles Lamb who really solidified this take on Hogarth. He said that Hogarth's graphic representations are indeed books. […]
