10 Guns Only Ignorant People Carry — And the #1 Mistake Isn’t the Gun
Your gun probably isn’t the problem. You are.
That will offend some gun owners. Good. Because owning a firearm, buying an expensive optic, carrying a massive caliber, or posting your EDC online does not make you competent.
In this episode, Valortec breaks down 10 guns people carry for the wrong reasons—ego, nostalgia, bad advice, bargain-bin thinking, ballistic mythology, and outright ignorance.
Competition guns. Heirlooms. Cowboy revolvers. Derringers. Exotic calibers. Hand cannons. DIY trigger jobs. Mystery bargain pistols. Pocket .22s and .25s.
But none of them take the #1 spot.
That belongs to the gun you carry but never train with.
Because the uncomfortable truth is simple:
You cannot buy competence. You have to earn it.
Stop expecting hardware to compensate for poor training.

You Know HOW to Shoot. But Do You Know WHY? | The Science of Marksmanship
Most firearms training teaches you what to do. Far fewer instructors can explain why it actually works.
In this episode, we examine The Science of Marksmanship: From Tradition to Truth by Herfel Torres—a book that challenges firearms folklore, inherited doctrine, and the dangerous assumption that experience automatically equals understanding.
We break down why the book approaches marksmanship through biomechanics, kinesiology, neuroscience, visual processing, motor learning, recoil physics, and human performance under stress. We also examine verified-purchase reviews from readers who describe backgrounds in military service, firearms instruction, armed security, competitive shooting, and professional training—and why their perspectives add meaningful context to the conversation.
This is not another discussion about buying better equipment or memorizing another shooting technique.
It is about understanding the human system behind the firearm.
If your instructor can tell you HOW but cannot explain WHY, there is still something missing.

YOU BOUGHT THE FERRARI. BUT CAN YOUR OFFICERS ACTUALLY DRIVE IT?
A premium duty pistol can improve performance. It cannot manufacture competence.
In this episode of Tactical Edge: The Valortec Briefing, Herfel “Boots” Torres takes on one of the most uncomfortable conversations in law-enforcement firearms training: Are agencies developing better shooters—or simply buying equipment that makes qualification easier?
Using the Staccato 2011 “Ferrari Fallacy,” we examine the dangerous tendency to confuse improved equipment performance with improved human performance.
A better trigger does not create judgment.
A better optic does not create visual processing.
A premium pistol does not create accountability.
And a higher qualification score does not automatically equal greater firearms competency.
The point is not that agencies should avoid premium pistols. Quite the opposite.
Buy the Ferrari. But train the driver.
Because when the predictable qualification course ends and the real-world problem begins, the firearm cannot think, discriminate, manage stress, or decide whether the shot should be taken.
The officer must.
