<p>Der Shangri-La-Dialog fand Ende Mai in Singapur statt. Der Shangri-La Dialogue gilt als wichtigste Sicherheitskonferenz im asiatisch-pazifischen Raum. Die Konferenz wird seit 2002 vom International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) organisiert.</p> <p>Am diesjährigen Dialog nahmen erneut zahlreiche Verteidigungsminister sowie andere hochrangige Regierungsvertreter teil, darunter die Verteidigungsminister der USA, Japans, Südkoreas, Australiens, der Philippinen, Malaysias und Singapurs. Der chinesische Verteidigungsminister fehlte erneut. </p> <p></p>

Wider das Vergessen: 37 Jahre nach Tian-An-Men
<p>Auch in diesem Jahr fanden in Taiwan Gedenkveranstaltungen zum Jahrestag des Tienanmen-Vorfalls vom 4. Juni 1989 statt. Wieviele Menschen bei der gewaltsamen Niederschlagung der Demokratiebewegung in China ums Leben kamen, ist nicht bekannt. In China sind diese Ereignisse tabu. Tseng Chien-yuan, geschäftsführendes Vorstandsmitglied der "New School for Democracy", erklärte im Interview mit RTI die Entwicklungen in den 37 Jahren und warum das Gedenken an den Tian-An-Men-Zwischenfall immer noch so wichtig ist. Die "New School for Democracy" ist einer der Organisatoren der Gedenkveranstaltungen in Taipei am Abend des 4. Juni.</p>

Frank Hsie über Taiwans erste direkte Präsidentschaftswahl vor 30 Jahren
<p>Vor 30 Jahren fand in Taiwan die erste direkte Präsidentschaftswahl statt. Zuvor wurde der Präsident nicht direkt vom Volk, sondern indirekt durch die Nationalversammlung gewählt.</p> <p>Die erste direkte Wahl des Präsidenten und des Vizepräsidenten durch die Bevölkerung war ein wichtiger Meilenstein der Demokratisierung Taiwans.</p> <p>Frank Hsieh, der damals als Vizepräsidentschaftskandidat der Demokratischen Fortschrittspartei (DPP) an dieser Wahl teilnahm, erinnert sich an die Präsidentschaftswahl von 1996 und blickt auf die politischen Entwicklungen der vergangenen dreißig Jahre zurück.</p>
