Before you judge a job, listen to someone who has actually done it.
Before you envy a job, learn what it costs.
Before you dismiss a job, understand the skill inside it.
And before you reduce a person to their occupation, hear their story.
Tales from the Shift is a job deep dive show about the real lives behind the titles. Every profession has a public myth and a private reality. We sit down with the people who have lived the work and ask what outsiders get wrong, what the job demands, what it gives back, and what it takes from them.
It is honest conversation with cops, nurses, lawyers, tradesmen, military veterans, performers, business owners, and people from jobs most of us misunderstand.
Every job is a hidden world. Every worker knows something outsiders do not.
The job title is the label. The story is the truth.
NO AI videos are intentionally used, NO AI avatars or voicing. Real people, every time.
Water Well Driller Reveals How It's One of the Best Trades in 2026 | Real Truth About Jobs
Dan is a water well driller, and this is a deep dive into how that job actually works.
He explains how crews drill through overburden and solid granite looking for water-bearing fractures. The machines can weigh around 80,000 pounds. A modern rig can cost well over $1 million. The driller still has to make decisions with incomplete information.
Topics covered: bedrock well drilling; groundwater fractures; 80,000-pound drill rigs; water well depth; artesian wells; hydrofracking; per-foot well pricing; drilling hazards; rig rollover recovery; water testing; uranium in private wells; well drilling licenses; long and unpredictable workdays; skilled-trade labor shortages; private equity and AI in the trades
Tales from the Shift goes deeper than any other show on jobs. Not just what the work looks like. What it actually does to the person doing it. The real cost, the real rewards, and the truth that usually stays behind closed doors.

Pararescue: The Special Operations Job You've Never Heard Of | Real Truth About Jobs
Brian Silva served as an Air Force Pararescueman (PJ aka Parajumper) from 2005 to 2018. Most people have never heard of the job. Everyone knows what a Navy SEAL is. Almost nobody knows that PJs exist, or that every single one of them is also a nationally registered paramedic trained to work combat trauma, mountain rescue, Arctic survival, and open-ocean recovery inside the same career.
Tales from the Shift goes deeper than any other show on jobs. Not just what the work looks like. What it actually does to the person doing it. The real cost, the real rewards, and the truth that usually stays behind closed doors.

Common misconceptions addressed:
- That Pararescuemen are just combat medics. PJs train across parachuting, diving, mountain rescue, Arctic operations, and jungle survival on top of advanced trauma medicine.
- That special operators are supposed to just tough out trauma. Brian says trying to push through psychological and physical problems on his own made things worse, not better.
- That battlefield pain medicine still means morphine ampoules like in old war movies. PJs now carry fentanyl lollipops instead.
- That PTSD only counts if you deployed into direct combat. Brian says trauma is individual and can come from training or non-combat experiences too.

Former CIA Agent: Some of What I Know Will Never Be Declassified | Truth About Jobs
Scott Urbach returns to Tales from the Shift for his "overtime" episode, going deeper into daily life inside the CIA: protective details, cover stories, and classified phone calls most people will never make. Scott worked as an operations officer on the Director's Protective Staff, carrying a Rolodex with numbers for the National Security Agency and the White House Situation Room. He was waterboarded during a training exercise and confirms exactly what it does to the body. He also explains the specific briefing CIA security officers received about what happens if they're ever captured in the field, the kind of thing Hollywood never gets right.
Tales from the Shift goes deeper than any other show on jobs. Not just what the work looks like. What it actually does to the person doing it. The real cost, the real rewards, and the truth that usually stays behind closed doors.
