The Four Horsemen: The Riders Said to Bring the End of the World
John of Patmos witnesses a sealed scroll before heaven’s throne, and no one can open it. Then a slain yet standing Lamb takes the scroll and breaks its seals. A crowned bowman rides from a white horse, a red rider takes peace from the earth, scales measure grain beneath a black horseman, and Death rides a pale horse with Hades following.
This episode follows Revelation beyond its famous four mounted figures: the slain witnesses beneath the altar, the terror of the sixth seal, the restrained winds, the multitude standing before the throne, the silence of the seventh seal, and the later judgment of Death and Hades. It also considers earlier prophetic horse imagery, Victorinus of Pettau’s interpretation, and Albrecht Dürer’s enduring 1498 woodcut.
Only Death is explicitly named in Revelation’s four-rider sequence. Conquest, War, and Famine remain useful explanatory labels, but they are not presented as four formal names in the passage.

Fenrir: The Giant Wolf the Gods Feared So Much They Chained Him
On Lyngvi, an island in Lake Ámsvartnir, Fenrir faces the final test devised by the gods of Norse myth. Two mighty fetters have already failed. Their last answer is Gleipnir: a soft-looking ribbon made from six impossible ingredients.
Fenrir suspects that this slight band carries a danger greater than its appearance. He agrees to the test only if a god places a hand in his mouth as a pledge. Týr, the one god named as brave enough to feed the growing wolf, accepts the demand—and loses his right hand when Gleipnir holds.
Following Gylfaginning chapters 34 and 51, this episode traces the choices that lead from prophecy and fear to the binding on Lyngvi, then forward to the foretold catastrophe of Ragnarök. It also distinguishes Snorri’s extended prose sequence from related poetic references to Týr, Fenrir, Odin, and Víðarr.

Athena: The Goddess Born From the Head of Zeus
Athena’s armed emergence from the head of Zeus is among the most recognizable scenes in Greek myth. Yet the spectacle begins with a prophecy, a pregnant goddess named Metis, and Zeus’s attempt to stop a future son from becoming ruler of gods and mortals.
This episode follows the surviving evidence behind Athena’s birth: Hesiod’s account of Metis and the succession prophecy, Pindar’s bronze axe and battle cry, the Homeric Hymn’s cosmic reaction, Apollodorus’s alternative axe-bearers and River Triton setting, archaic vase paintings, Aeschylus’s courtroom Athena, and the lost center of the Parthenon’s east pediment.
The story has no conventional mortal hero facing a monster. Its setting is the Greek divine cosmos, and its conflict is a struggle over prophecy, succession, birth, counsel, and divine authority. Why did Greek tradition preserve Athena as the conceived child of Metis while also allowing her to appear as Zeus’s father-born daughter?
