"Talk with Julie" is a refreshing and insightful health podcast that invites listeners on a journey toward holistic well-being. With a warm and engaging approach, I explore a wide range of topics related to physical, mental, and emotional health. Each episode features enlightening conversations with experts and inspiring individuals who share their knowledge, experiences, and practical tips for living a healthier, more balanced life. Whether you're seeking motivation, guidance, or simply a deeper understanding of illnesses, this is the place to be!
In this episode of Talk with Julie by Doki's Advice, I sat down with Gideon, who was born with spina bifida, to hear his story.
Gideon talks about what life is like growing up with a disability, how his friends helped him at school, and the important role his mum has played in supporting and encouraging him. We also talk about why our communities need more awareness and understanding of people living with disabilities.
Gideon uses crutches and takes a little longer to walk and move around, but that doesn't stop him from doing what he loves. He is a football goalkeeper, enjoys drawing, and is passionate about developing websites. His story reminds us that a disability does not define a person.
One of my favourite things Gideon said was, "It's your smile that will determine how the rest of the day goes."
If you'd like to hear more about Gideon's journey through his mum's eyes, don't miss the previous episode where she shares her experience of raising a child with spina bifida.
If you feel moved by Gideon's story and would like to support him by helping him buy incontinence pants, please get in touch with me. Every act of kindness, big or small, can make a real difference.

Raising a Special Child
Every child is a gift, but raising a special needs child brings a unique set of challenges, profound life lessons, and unmatched rewards. In this episode of Talk with Julie by Doki´s advice , we sit down with Mama Pamela to discuss the reality, the financial and emotional hurdles, and the ultimate triumphs of raising her special son.Key Take aways :
The Weight of Caregiving: Raising a special needs child is a full-time responsibility. It often leaves parents with absolutely no time to work a traditional job, as they must act as 24/7 primary caregivers.
The Financial Toll: The cost of specialized care adds up rapidly. From wheelchairs and crutches to the daily necessity of using 4 to 5 diapers a day, the financial strain on a family is immense.
Navigating It Alone: Tragically, Mama Pamela shares a reality many faces—her husband walked away after the initial diagnosis. Managing this huge task as a single parent is an overwhelming burden for just one person.
Finding Strength in the Wins: Despite the odds, there is so much hope. Mama Pamela finds immense strength in her son's brilliant digital literacy. She shares her ultimate pride as a mother: She never gave up, and her son is now completing high school!
A Message to Society & Parents: A special child is just like any other kid—their growth and happiness depend heavily on your parenting. To the parents out there, never give up, and give them all the love you have. To society, it’s time to accept, embrace, and show love to special needs children

From Whispered Curses to Loud Applause: Breaking Spina Bifida Stigma
In this powerful episode of my podcast, Talk with Julie by Dokis Advice, I sit down with Mama Pamela for an unforgettable conversation about maternal love, cultural stigma, and resilience.
Mama Pamela shares the overwhelming shock of her son's birth, where she was confronted with a raw wound on his back and a diagnosis she had never heard of: Spina Bifida. Isolated and grieving, she had to navigate cruel cultural beliefs from a community that labeled her disabled newborn as a curse, leading people to blame God for the family's misfortune. Her pain was magnified as people came to visit just to stare at the open wound on the child's back.
However, our conversation shifts from heartbreak to hope as Mama Pamela describes the immense sacrifices she made—selling working hard to secure him a place in a proper, inclusive school. Years later, those sacrifices have borne incredible fruit. Now a thriving, brilliant teenager excelling in his studies, her son has shattered every limitation placed upon him. Mama Pamela reflects beautifully to me on how he developed over the years, transforming a painful medical crisis into a story of ultimate pride, proving that love can conquer even the heaviest cultural burdens.
