What Does It Mean to Be a Jew? with Rudy Rochman
In this episode of Tanach & Tea, we’re joined by Rudy Rochman — Jewish activist, educator, speaker, filmmaker, and one of the most recognizable voices in the conversation about Jewish identity, Israel, and the future of the Jewish people. Known for his work building Jewish unity, exploring lost Jewish communities around the world, and challenging conventional assumptions about what it means to be Jewish, Rudy brings a unique perspective to a conversation that spans history, hashkafa, identity, and current events.
As always, we start with Tanach Barbershop Talk:
If you could go on vacation with anyone from Tanach — who are you picking?
And if you had a time machine, where in Jewish history would you go?
From there, things get real:
What does it actually mean to be a Jew?
Is Jewish identity primarily about Torah and halacha — or is there something broader that binds us together as a people?
How much of the divide in the Jewish world is rooted in Torah, and how much is the result of centuries of exile?
We also explore:
• The differences between Shaul and David — and what their leadership models can teach us about Israel today
• How many Jews are actually out there — and the mystery of the Ten "Lost" Tribes
• How the Jewish people impact the spiritual reality of the world
• Whether Hashem sometimes speaks to the Jewish people through antisemites
• Candace Owens & Charlie Kirk: Was she right that Israel was "involved"?
• Why antisemites may have more in common with the frogs of Egypt than you think
• Assimilation, Jewish continuity, and the future of the Jewish people
• Mashiach. The Missing Years. The year 6000. Are we closer than we think?
We also discuss the Sudra, reclaiming Jewish identity, and the challenge of maintaining idealism in a world that often rewards cynicism.
This is one of those conversations that jumps from Tanach to current events, from ancient history to modern identity, and from big ideas to deeply personal questions about who we are as Jews and where we're headed as a people.
