What Does It Mean to Be a Jew? with Rudy Rochman

In this episode of Tanach & Tea, we’re joined by Rudy Rochman — Jewish activist, educator, speaker, filmmaker, and one of the most recognizable voices in the conversation about Jewish identity, Israel, and the future of the Jewish people. Known for his work building Jewish unity, exploring lost Jewish communities around the world, and challenging conventional assumptions about what it means to be Jewish, Rudy brings a unique perspective to a conversation that spans history, hashkafa, identity, and current events.

As always, we start with Tanach Barbershop Talk:

If you could go on vacation with anyone from Tanach — who are you picking?

And if you had a time machine, where in Jewish history would you go?

From there, things get real:

What does it actually mean to be a Jew?

Is Jewish identity primarily about Torah and halacha — or is there something broader that binds us together as a people?

How much of the divide in the Jewish world is rooted in Torah, and how much is the result of centuries of exile?

We also explore:

• The differences between Shaul and David — and what their leadership models can teach us about Israel today

• How many Jews are actually out there — and the mystery of the Ten "Lost" Tribes

• How the Jewish people impact the spiritual reality of the world

• Whether Hashem sometimes speaks to the Jewish people through antisemites

• Candace Owens & Charlie Kirk: Was she right that Israel was "involved"?

• Why antisemites may have more in common with the frogs of Egypt than you think

• Assimilation, Jewish continuity, and the future of the Jewish people

• Mashiach. The Missing Years. The year 6000. Are we closer than we think?

We also discuss the Sudra, reclaiming Jewish identity, and the challenge of maintaining idealism in a world that often rewards cynicism.

This is one of those conversations that jumps from Tanach to current events, from ancient history to modern identity, and from big ideas to deeply personal questions about who we are as Jews and where we're headed as a people.

🎙 Guest: Rudy Rochman https://www.instagram.com/rudy_israel

🔗 Listen everywhere: https://linktr.ee/tanachandtea

📱 Instagram Reels & clips:
https://www.instagram.com/tanachandtea/

🎥 Full video available on YouTube (and Spotify Video):https://www.youtube.com/@tanachandtea

📩 To sponsor an episode:
tanachandtea@gmail.com

🙏 This episode is sponsored by:
Luxury4Charity.org/Tanach

Luxury4Charity directly supports: Kollel Derech Chaim — a vibrant makom Torah in Yerushalayim building the next generation of leaders for Klal Yisrael; and The Tefillin Project — which helps Jews around the world experience the mitzvah of tefillin — often for the very first time.

Win a 4-Day Jamaica Vacation! 2 roundtrip flights, world-class all-inclusive beachfront resort, dedicated kosher cuisine prepared fresh on premises, and roundtrip airport transfers included!

Prize Includes: 2 roundtrip flights to Jamaica, a 4-day stay at the iconic Sandals Dunn's River, one of Jamaica's most celebrated all-inclusive beachfront resorts, dedicated kosher meals prepared fresh on premises by the resort chef, and roundtrip airport transfers.

Luxury4Charity.org/Tanach

Anan: The most comfortable tzitzit you’ll ever wear.
AnanWear.com

Use code TANACH10 for 10% off your order.

Don't be a Loser: Israel & Hashkafa with Rabbi Moshe Nachbar (19)

In this episode of Tanach & Tea, we’re joined by Rabbi Moshe Nachbar

- Rebbe u’Mashpia, educator, personal development coach, co-founder of Nekudah Tova of Hollywood, and host of the podcast Light in the Pocket — and my colleague at Katz Yeshiva High School, for a conversation that goes straight at some of the biggest — and most uncomfortable — questions about Israel, hashkafa, and what Judaism actually demands from us today.

Rabbi Nachbar brings a unique blend of Torah depth, Breslov thought, and real-world perspective to a conversation that doesn’t stay theoretical.

We start with Tanach Barbershop Talk:
If you had to choose someone from Tanach to be Prime Minister today — who are you picking?

From there, things get real:

What is hashkafa — and is there really only one “correct” approach?
Does Zionism belong inside Judaism, or is it something else entirely?
What role is the Diaspora supposed to play today?

We also explore:
• Why Rabbi Akiva’s students specifically died during Sefirat HaOmer
• Whether Yom HaAtzmaut being in Sefirah is coincidence — or something deeper
• If our current leaders are failing us
• Whether the Meraglim are still among us — just in a different form
• What Tanach actually says about the world we’re living in right now
• Are we living more “rabbinically” than “biblically” — and what does that even mean?
• Are we too comfortable spiritually?
• What are we actually afraid of?

And yes — we go there:
Should Chareidim be drafted? Hallel with a bracha?
Can we accept irreligious Jews? (Rav Kook, Breslov, and beyond)

This is one of those conversations that challenges how you think — about Israel, about Judaism, and about yourself.

🎙 Guest: Rabbi Moshe Nachbar — https://www.instagram.com/nach_notes

🎥 Full video available on YouTube (and Spotify Video):
https://www.youtube.com/@tanachandtea

📱 Instagram Reels & clips:
https://www.instagram.com/tanachandtea/

🔗 Listen everywhere:
https://linktr.ee/tanachandtea

📩 To sponsor an episode:
tanachandtea@gmail.com

Being a Slave was Good: Pesach, Shabbat, & Freedom from Freedom (Bonus)

Special Episode of Tanach & Tea with my students L'Kvod Rosh Chodesh Nisan. Leilui Nishmat Baruch ben Roza & Mirel Bat Chaim Yehoshua Halevi.

Being a slave sounds like the worst possible thing. So why would the Torah need us to go through Egypt?

In this episode, we explore a surprising idea: that what looked like the lowest point in Jewish history was actually a necessary step toward receiving the Torah. Sometimes what feels like suffering is really preparation.

We unpack how the Jews only fully understood this after leaving Egypt—when they were finally able to sing, realizing that everything they thought was bad was actually part of something much greater.

From there, we zoom out to a bigger question: what is freedom, really?

Because today, we may not be slaves to Pharaoh—but we’re often slaves to something else. Our phones, our stress, our endless choices. Too much freedom can actually trap us.

That’s where Shabbat comes in.

Shabbat isn’t just a day of rest—it’s a kind of Hashem's rehab for us. A built-in “freedom from freedom.” A space where we step away from everything that controls us and reconnect with who we actually are. Not a deprivation—but the highest form of freedom.

This episode reframes Pesach, Shabbat, and what it truly means to be free. Freedom from freedom b/c freedom can be slavin'

https://linktr.ee/tanachandtea
