Leading the Military Media Ecosystem with Katherine Torres-Pummill

Some paths don’t move in a straight line. They’re shaped by grit, responsibility, and the willingness to keep choosing impact, even when the original plan changes. For Katherine Torres-Pummill, that path began in Queens, New York, where she was raised by a resilient single mother in a first-generation household surrounded by culture, community, and hard-earned lessons. She once imagined a future in law and public service, but her career in media revealed another way to serve: by telling stories, creating visibility, and helping communities be seen.

In this episode of the Tango Tango podcast, host Lloyd Knight sits down with Katherine Torres-Pummill, General Manager of Military & Defense at Recurrent Ventures, to discuss her journey from New York City to leading some of the most influential brands in the military and veteran space. Kathy reflects on growing up in Queens, working full-time while attending college at night, building a career across outdoor advertising, news, licensing, and digital media, and taking the leap that brought her into military media through We Are The Mighty.

They also discuss the growth of Recurrent Military & Defense, including Military Influencer Conference, MilSpouse Fest, We Are The Mighty, Task & Purpose, and TWZ. Kathy shares how these brands are working together to serve the military community through storytelling, journalism, events, resources, and connection. Today, her mission is focused on giving the microphone back to the community, elevating the people doing the work, and making sure veterans, spouses, service members, and military families have the visibility and support they deserve.

Jump into the conversation:

(00:00) Intro

(02:47) Kathy’s Queens roots and first-generation grit

(04:33) The student who always sat up front

(05:26) Turning a VLP project into real impact

(08:11) From law school dreams to media purpose

(09:47) Working full-time and earning her degree

(15:18) Taking a chance on We Are The Mighty

(20:55) What MIC really means for the military community

(23:48) Expanding MilSpouse Fest to reach more families

(27:02) How We Are The Mighty tells military stories

(28:24) Task & Purpose and journalism that protects the community

(29:12) TWZ and trusted defense reporting

(32:09) Why MIC brings its mission to new cities

Additional Links & Resources:

Learn more about Tango Tango: https://supplychainnow.com/program/tango-tango

Connect with Lloyd Knight: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lloydknight

Connect with Katherine Torres-Pummill: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katherinetorrespummill/

Learn more about Recurrent Ventures: https://recurrent.io/

Learn more about CareSource Military and Veterans: https://www.caresource.com/about-us/caresource-military-and-veterans/

Work with us! Appalachian Roots, Marine Corps Grit: The Brandon Wilson Story

Some callings start with a moment you can’t ignore. For Brandon Wilson, that moment came after the death of his childhood friend, whose helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan. Raised in Brevard, North Carolina, in a family rooted in faith, hard work, and generations of military service, Brandon left a life as a professional hunting guide and walked into a Marine Corps recruiting office ready to serve. What followed was 12 years in the infantry, deployments to Iraq and Ukraine, and a deeper understanding of sacrifice, brotherhood, and what it means to keep showing up for the people beside you.

In this episode of the Tango Tango podcast, host Lloyd Knight sits down with Brandon Wilson, Marine Corps veteran, Chief Operating Officer of Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry, and longtime veteran advocate, for a conversation about service, transition, mentorship, and faith. Brandon reflects on growing up in rural North Carolina, joining the Marine Corps after his childhood friend’s death, finding his footing after leaving the infantry, and the chance encounter with General Carl Mundy that became one of the most meaningful mentorships of his life. He also shares how his work as a veteran service officer grew into systems-level advocacy, from Camp Lejeune water contamination claims to helping build North Carolina’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Today, Brandon continues that mission through Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry, where he helps lead programs supporting veterans, families, and communities across North Carolina. From housing and employment to suicide prevention, disaster recovery, and long-term support for Western North Carolina after devastating flooding, his work is grounded in the same belief that carried him from the Marine Corps into public service: veterans still have a place, a purpose, and something powerful to give. His advice to those struggling is simple and steady: keep the faith, find a mentor, and find your place.

Jump into the conversation:

(00:00) Intro

(01:13) Brandon Wilson and his veteran leadership work

(04:51) Growing up with faith, service, and hard work

(07:51) Becoming a hunting guide before the Marine Corps

(11:28) Joining the Marines and serving as a machine gunner

(15:51) Leaving infantry and starting a new chapter

(17:12) Losing brotherhood during military transition

(19:02) Finding purpose through helping veterans

(21:23) Meeting General Mundy and gaining a mentor

(25:15) Advocating for Camp Lejeune veterans

(26:38) Moving from county support to statewide change

(30:44) Leading ABCCM’s mission across North Carolina

(32:54) Responding to Western North Carolina flooding

(36:05) Rebuilding housing and support for veterans

(44:02) Brandon’s advice for struggling veterans

Additional Links & Resources:

Learn more about CareSource Military and Veterans: https://www.caresource.com/about-us/caresource-military-and-veterans/

Learn more about Tango Tango: https://supplychainnow.com/program/tango-tango

Connect with Lloyd Knight: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lloydknight

Connect with Brandon Wilson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandon-wilson09011978/

Learn more about Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry: https://www.abccm.org/

Work with us! Beyond the Career: Beau Higgins’ Mission to Serve Veterans

Some careers are built through careful planning. Others are shaped by curiosity, service, and a willingness to keep showing up wherever people need you most. For Beau Higgins, the path from New Orleans to Marine Corps colonel was never about chasing status or recognition. It was about leadership, responsibility, and taking care of the people around him. From humanitarian missions in Somalia to combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, Beau learned that leadership changes as you grow, but the foundation stays the same: put your people first, stay humble, and never make it about yourself.

In this episode of the Tango Tango podcast, host Lloyd Knight sits down with Beau Higgins, Marine Corps veteran, senior client partner at The Military Veteran, and VP for business development at Oplign, to discuss leadership, military transition, and the power of personal branding. Beau reflects on his journey from New Orleans to the battlefield to the corporate world, sharing lessons on mentorship, veteran hiring, networking, and why success comes from helping others succeed first.

Today, Beau continues serving the veteran community through organizations like Oplign and The Military Veteran, helping veterans and military spouses navigate careers, connect with opportunities, and build stronger futures. Whether speaking at events, mentoring transitioning service members, or simply showing up for people behind the scenes, Beau’s mission remains rooted in the same philosophy that guided him from the beginning: leadership is about helping others succeed and making sure nobody has to navigate the journey alone.

Jump into the conversation:

(00:00) Intro

(01:56) Jesuit values that shaped Beau’s leadership philosophy

(05:02) Choosing UVA and walking onto football

(08:09) Joining Marines after meeting recruiter

(10:04) Camp Lejeune and first Somalia deployment

(11:41) Somalia humanitarian mission and combat realities

(17:47) Servant leadership and caring for Marines

(19:31) Lieutenant versus colonel leadership responsibilities

(21:49) First Marines entering Afghanistan after 9/11

(24:29) Leadership lessons from General Dunford

(27:43) Transitioning from Marines through networking conversations

(31:23) Building Amazon’s veteran hiring initiatives

(38:35) How the jacket brand started

(42:54) Personal branding through volunteering and consistency

(52:37) Family, running, and veteran volunteer work

Additional Links & Resources:

Learn more about Tango Tango: https://supplychainnow.com/program/tango-tango

Connect with Lloyd Knight: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lloydknight

Connect with Beau Higgins: https://www.linkedin.com/in/beauhiggins1/

Learn more about Oplign: https://www.oplign.com/

Learn more about The Military Veteran: https://www.themilvet.org/

Work with us!
