Nạn hàng giả không phải là mới, nhưng tác động kinh tế của tệ nạn rất lớn, chiếm khoảng 2,5% thương mại toàn cầu và gây thiệt hại mỗi năm hàng tỷ đô la cho các doanh nghiệp trên thế giới. Hàng giả không chỉ gây hại cho doanh nghiệp mà còn ảnh hưởng đến người tiêu dùng, vì họ mua phải những sản phẩm kém chất lượng, thậm chí nguy hiểm. Chỉ riêng tại Pháp, 37% người tiêu dùng đã vô tình mua phải hàng giả.
