About Teaching While White Podcast
Over 80% of teachers in the U.S. are white. But most don’t know that their whiteness matters. TWW seeks to move the conversation forward on how to be consciously, intentionally, anti-racist in the classroom. Because "white" does not mean a blank slate. It is a set of assumptions that is the baseline from which everything is judged; it is what passes for normal. This means if you are not white or don’t adhere to those assumptions, you are abnormal or less than. TWW wants to have conversations about those assumptions: what they are, how they impact our students, and how we can confront our assumptions to promote racial literacy.

[…] And so we need teachers who are able to do that with all kinds of kids, not just kids who are like them. right from the same background. And so the work you're doing to help white teachers, I really think this is what all teachers need to do. They need to be self-critical, they need to examine themselves, look at what they're doing because being a teacher is really a privileged work. We don't pay teachers like it is, but we're taking care of other people's children. We're guiding them and we're shaping their future. And when we understand how important that work is, I think we approach it with a sense of responsibility and dignity that the position deserves. […]
